Excellent reading on the list today guys.
Thanks for the unexpected pleasures of everybodys articles and
responses, not just today but always. I generally lurk, but I wanted to
say thanks today.

You need a bio-chemist to explain the allergic reactions some
people have to nickel and a physicist to send you to sleep with
information about the effect of the mass of the instrument has on tone
etc (I am one so can say this). Experiments have gone so far as
to encase a trumpet in lead and see if the sound is different to a
similar non lead encased instrument. As I recall (this was a long time
ago) the only noticeable difference was that you got a bit more
out of the bell for the same input. The fact that playing a 28lb
trumpet was difficult did not figure in the information.
As to radiation exposure you can double your annual dose by
standing in a crowd for considerable periods of time and letting all
the natural radiation from the C14 etc in those around you get to
you. A jet flight is another way to increase your annual
dose.

As for weight I by personal experience can tell that a pre-1930
Conn 40K is a deadly load to schlep around. But then the sound is to
die for.

Thanks for the pictures, too. Fascinating!
Btw, lately several people are sending mail to the list in
something other than plain ASCII text format. The various formats
make quite mess, full of MIME and other code gobbledygook that the
server converts to text. These digests are difficult to sort out
in a word processor, even when saved to disk. I hope you guys
will please give the rest of us a break and send plain text! Some
of the same people compound the legibility problem by replying to the
entire digest, sending the whole thing back, instead of snipping out a
quotation for a reply.

On my screen anyway, the lower one is there; the upper one has
only a caption and a red X in a box.

Yep, linked directly to the picture - on my hard drive at home.
Check back tonight...
BTW, the archives are now current up to 2/20/05.
Enjoy,
