Ignorance is not knowing the difference between an Eb tubax and an Eb contrabass sax.

Could one of you fine woodwind players please help a string and brass guy discern between the two?
Are there different tonal ranges for the two?
Are there different mouthpieces/reeds for the two?
Are the overall bores and dimensions different?
Are the metals different?
I'm guessing the manufacturers are different...
Anything else I'm missing?
Please, O Seismic Ones, enlighten me!

Thanks!

> Are there different mouthpieces/reeds for the two?
Yes, the Tubax takes a Bari mouthpiece with a Bari reed, and the Contra takes a specially made Contra mouthpiece with Contrabass clarinet reeds.

> Are the overall bores and dimensions different?
Yes, the Tubax has a much smaller bore and the keys are much closer together.  The Contra's keys are really big and further apart, they are also placed in an unusual position; one hand above your head and one hand below your waist.

> Are the metals different?
I doubt that the metals are different, but the lacquer is definitely different.  The Tubax has a special darker lacquer and the contra has the "bright brass" color.

> I'm guessing the manufacturers are different...
Eppelsheim makes the Tubax and Orsi makes the Contrabass

> Anything else I'm missing?
There is a huge price difference (Tubax~ $20,000 and the Contrabass~ $45,000) Overall the Tubax is an easier instrument to play but the Contrabass has much more "stage presence"

Hope that helps!

btw~   The Femmes invited me to play with them on October 15 in Santa Anita and then ride the tour bus to Phoenix.  They also want me to play with them on New Years Eve in the Qualcomm arena!
