I am in the market for a good tuba that will get me
through a school of music in New York.  What brand tuba
do I buy?  I am going into Orchestral performance, so any
tuba that I do buy will be a CC.  I just don't what brand
is best.  At this moment, my price range is from
$5000-$6000.  The Tubist in the Milwaukee symphony
suggested I buy a Miraphone S1865VL CC tuba, but
Miraphone sponsors him.  I don't know whether the tuba is
what I need or if he is just trying to get a good
commisson.  What should I buy?

I have been using the K&M bass clarinet/bassoon stand, I originally bought for my bass, iwth my contra bass without any problems.   WWBW for about $110.  Get the larger one, they have two sizes.  It should work for the contra alto.  John

I just thought this ought to receive a little wider attention:-

Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys is currently touring with a bass harmonica
player, as seen recently on Conan O'Brien's show. WARNING: Mr. Wilson seemed
to be having quite an intonation problem! May have been insufficient monitor
volume, as the sound mix seemed to be missing various performers' sound at
different points. On the other hand, Brian has partied pretty hard over the
years and...............God bless!

They're probably referring to an English horn, since the Ring does not have a
bass oboe part and the Heckelphone hadn't been invented yet.  There is a
rather "noisy" English horn solo in Siegfried when Siegfried tries (not very
well) to imitate a bird call he heard on an instrument he makes out of cane.
