"octocontrabass we could own jointly".

I can't see more than 5 or 8 people stepping forward for this sort of
thing, BUT. Just suppose there really are say 18 people that get on this
idea. Then it might have to be "time shared" out like a vacation cabin
or an airplane. I don't know how easy this would be to manipulate into a
working scheme. How much time a year would that be with 18 people any
way? providing time for it to travel a bit that would be two weeks per
co-owner

Aye, there's the rub. On the other hand, two weeks is better than
zero weeks, which is what we presently have. The next question,
as with any shared ownership arrangement: how much time is worth
how much money to how many people?

I would see it as a learning experience / satisfaction of curiosity
more than a 'practical' thing, anyway. One practical advantage:
more exposure for the octocontrabass could lead to more
literature being written for it (though I'm not sure of the solo
possibilities of an instrument that goes to about 16Hz), which
*could* lead to a market sufficient to spark interest in regular
production. Which would drive down the price, which would
result in more interest from potential buyers...

It's an intriguing concept - keep talking.

Ball-parking the math, I calculate more like $100 each.  I don't play reeds, but it would be worth
it to me to obtain accurate feature recordings of an octocontrabass. Normal orchestrations only
allow for supporting roles and the occasional melody line; and standard recording techniques are a
little bass shy of reality.

How many of us had a Eureka moment when we first heard a contrabass note?  This instrument could be
used to make a showcase CD.  We have the composers, arrangers and players to really promote
contrabass.  The digital format eliminated the bass limitation of recording, and there are now
microphones and headphones that extend to EEE.

I am ready to chip in and to follow the instrument around New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts
with my octocontrabass microphones.  This would insure a new generation of players and makers, and
maybe even increase the audience!

Count me in (up to a few $100)  but -  it will have to come to Florida.  Not just the N.E.

Craig-

If that were a sufficient goal to having a jointly-sponsored instrument,
perhaps we have enough collective influence to coax Leblanc into sponsoring a
"tour" of one of the existing instruments.

Appearances of such an instrument with well known Bands or Orchestras,
playing music that would show it off, would do as much to spark interest as
we could hope.  If there is a real value in having such an instrument, it
would not have to play all solos to enhance the overall sound of the group.

Hi All -- count me in too for $100.  Also in south Florida (Keys).  Don't
really want to use it for a week or two, just to play it once each time it
gets to this neck of the woods.  Currently using a borrowed contra-alto and
it vibrates my eyeballs.  Looking to buy a contrabass--who knows what that
would vibrate!  A octo contrabass could actually vibrate a person on the
cellular level and be quite healing (I do sound massage and healing).  The
idea of producing one or more CDs using the various contra clarinets and
other contra insturments would be wonderful--I'll buy a few.   Dan Kunz.
