chip and and as a group, we commission an
octocontrabass from them, which we could own jointly.

Yeah, that's the ticket!

If Timothy isn't just having us on, then I take it that the primary goals
are to a.) bring another octocontrabass into the world, and b.) allow
as many people as possible an opportunity to see it up close and play
it. Noble ideas, but there are many practical questions. How would it
be decided who plays it when? Some sort of rotation seems fairest,
but coordination of schedules might be a major difficulty in itself.
What about people who aren't interested in playing it (like that
could happen in this group)? How would transport and insurance
be handled? What if someone wanted to join - or leave - the
owner's group after the purchase was made?

Going back to the who/when question, a library-style check-out
procedure might be easier on the instrument - assuming everyone
can agree on where the instrument calls 'home', and who arbitrates
conflicting requests.

All easily answered. If everyone on the list (and any other
Contrabass-o-philes) chipped in say $5 (US), we could probably buy one. As
to who would house it? The people who would take care of it would BE
responsible for taking care of--in every way (buying/making reeds,
maintenance, insurance, protection, etc.) In other words, no free rides.
