HI Tom,

I've never heard of the low A on a bassoon refered to as a "foot Joint".  The
low A, in fact, only adds about 6 1/4 inches.  It would, therefore, more
accurately be called a "half-foot joint".  The flute has a foot joint; all
the other woodwinds have "bells".  As other people have responded, there are
low A contras available but the note occurs so rarely, and it is usually
covered by everybody else, that the added expense and the change in the
center of gravity (making it harder to hold) tends to discourage contra
players from buying it.

I'm not sure how you came up with a 12" addition to the bassoon to play low
A.  The actual additional length is a bit over 7".

Contrabassoons are most often made down to Bb.  Bells to low A are made by a
few makers.  Moosmann has made one instrument down to Ab.  Some instruments
have Bb or A bells that are also interchangeable with C bells.

I've made almost 500 contrabassoons, all with Bb bells, including two with
interchangeable C bells.  The C bells were mostly for the novelty of it, as
the C bell has no real value today.  I get rare inquiries about A bells but
so far I haven't made any.

Hey!...Grant!

How did I end up on the e-group E-list?
I was perfectly happy on the list server.

plus it looks like my input don't go to the REAL list anymore, what's up
with that?

I set up the list on eGroups in hopes of avoiding spam - other lists I
subscribe to seem to be able to avoid it.  The original list is still up,
and enough subscribers have voted to keep the original list and put up with
the spam that I'll be deleting the eGroups list.
