Greetings, bass enthusiasts.

For those of you that might be interested, Scott Rimm-Hewitt, a
tuba grad student at UNC at Greensboro, will be running the Boston
Marathon tomorrow (Monday, April 17) with a tuba strapped to his back.
He's doing it to support the arts.  You might want to keep an eye out for
him on ESPN2 (I think they're the ones broadcasting the event).  Has this
ever been done before?  Is there a record for long distance running with
contrabass instruments?

        Cheers,

Perhaps I'll greet him with my helicon at the finish line if I get done in
time with my Patriots Day parade! (My first gig attempted after having my 4
upper front teeth removed and a denture installed!)

>Hey, why don't we each send Mary about a gigabyte of files?

Rule #1: never reply to spam.  Either (a) the return address will be
forged, in which case all the files will go to a fictitious address
(and therefore will return to you as a bounce message), or will go to
an innocent third party who will then have a claim against *you* for
email abuse, or (b) the spammer will simply note your email address,
and add it to their list of valid addresses than can be spammed next
time.

Rule #2: If you really want to help, check the email headers to see
where the spam *really* came from, and send a complaint to
abuse@their_ISP.  Most ISPs will shut down the spam fairly quickly
once they're notified.  To find out the real source, you can use a
program like Sam Spade (or the website at http://samspade.org/).
Look for the IP address (in square brackets) after the "received
from" line in the headers, and trace the route back from there:

>Received: from alamail.com [216.126.177.73] by jafar.securewebs.com

>MIME-Version: 1.0
>Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset="US-ASCII"
>Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit

In the quoted header, you would search on "216.126.177.73", which
would lead you to popsite.net and starnetusa.net, which is where most
of our spam comes from.  Polite complaints by email addressed to
abuse@ and postmaster@ for both domains usually result in the spammer
being dropped (until they set up their next fictitious account).

Rule #3: Let's now waste our own bandwith by paying any attention to
the spam, or discussing it on the list.

Rule #4: I certainly hope that everyone on the list is smart enough
to *never* consider a spam offer seriously.

Reply-To: contrabass@contrabass.com

Hi all,

I've decided to migrate the list to eGroups.com.  I'm already subscribed to a few lists there, and it appears that they're able to avoid the sort of spam problem I've been having with the current setup.  eGroups appears to also offer options as to immediate/digest/web only message service, as well as online polls, etc.  I've previously avoided moving the list because I don't particularly like having ads appended to each message that comes through, but have come to the realization that many subscribers have such ads already (mainly from free email accounts).  All in all, a small price to pay for eliminating the more offensive spam.  Hopefully it will also clear up some of our connection problems.

I've taken the liberty of forwarding the subscription list.  You may already have received a notice from eGroups.  If you're not already an egroups/onelist.com member, you may need to confirm and/or sign up.  I think you can unsubscribe simply by not replying to the subscription notice.

I'll continue to post archives as usual, of the new egroups list. I'll hang on to the current software for a week or so, just to make sure that the egroups setup is relatively glitch-free.  After that point, I'll shut down this list, and operate just the egroups list.

If anyone has preferences or suggestions for a different list provider, please let me know.

With fingers crossed,

Grant

I wrote to the free web space server that hosts the supplement
spam.  who knows whether that will do any good.  I called the 888
number for the next spam and am leaving a very long message -- as
much of an old radio drama as they will accept.  I figure if you
just swear at them, they hit delete.  give them something
interesting and then you waste their time. --- ahh, just timed
out after 5 minutes.  Lets use the re-dial feature.
Spiteful?  I'd mail dead rats if I knew their home addresses.  Or
maybe a plastic envelope filled with mayonnaise, something that
could get really stinky and hard to keep in the envelope once
opened.

Probably they are paying only a couple pennies a minute for the
toll free service.  Still, if they got as many calls as I got
spam, maybe it would hurt them.

Sooo
"CALL NOW AND SAVE TOLL FREE 1(888) 363-7881 ask for
extension 7000"

Just read Leo's message.  (what the heck, re-dial while I
compose).   I work at the FCC.  We do have regulations about
obscenity over the phone.  Wouldn't due to repeatedly call and
cuss.   However, there is nothing wrong with calling until you
get an answer or a request to stop.

Vis the internet, the Telecommunications Act of 1996 had some
language encouraging us to go after internet porn.  I don't know
exactly what happened, but  1) nobody in the agency wants
anything to do with regulating any aspect of the internet and 2)
I think someone went to court, something about fifth amendment
problems, etc.

Right now no government agency has any authority over spamming
per se.  If they ask you to invest money, then I would be they
are ignoring various SEC regulations.  If they are selling
something and make fraudulent statements, then they break FTC
rules.

I am thinking I should get e-mails for my congressman and
senators, and copy them whenever I report spam through
spamcop http://spamcop.net/?code=laT4FEeT%2FSvQElande%40erols.com
If everyone did that, then congress would know about the problem.

By the way ESCAPE was a wonderful radio show.  At the moment some
folks are trying to excape from hords of ravenous rats.

***End of Contrabass Digest***

Hello,

I've added you to my contrabass group at eGroups, a free,
easy-to-use email group service. As a member of this group, you
may send messages to the entire group using just one email address:
contrabass@egroups.com. eGroups also makes it easy to
store photos and files, coordinate events, and more.

Here's a description of the group:
------------------------------------------------------------------------

A group for discussing bass and contrabass instruments, acoustics, rare instruments (sarrusophones, cimbassi, etc.).  See also the older archives.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's my introductory message for you:
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi,

The contrabass email list is migrating to eGroups.  Hopefully,
this means no more spam.  eGroups also has additional
features, like automatic archiving, spam prevention,
automatically-tabulated polls, links, etc.  This is the successor
to Onelist.com (they merged).

If you're not already a onelist/egroup member, you may need to
confirm that you want to remain a subscriber here (I
assume they're adding additional instructions).  Let me know if
you're dissatisifed with the new operation.

I'll continue to post archives at my site, for continuity.  However,
as soon as this gets off the ground, and appears
relatively glitch-free, I'll be shutting down the current list
(contrabass@contrabass.com).  Please start using the new
address (contrabass@egroups.com) as of now!

Thanks,

Grant
