As a relative newcomer to the list I would like to alert all of you to some
CD's that feature large instruments in prominent roles. They come from the
label Vienna Modern Masters, a label devoted exclusively to 20th-century
classical music. All of these works are featured in collections of music by
several composers.

Their very first orchestral CD (VMM-2001) features a work by Werner Schulze
entitled "Snuninger." It features a prominent part for the heckelphone,
played by Alfred Hertel.

The others feature works of mine. On the CD "Modern American Chamber Music"
(VMM-2008) is a madrigal "E la Virtute un Raggio" that is based on a text of
Alessandro Striggio (first set to music by Claudio Monteverdi). The choir is
featured in tandem with a group of flutes, including alto and bass flutes
(the latter played by Vaclav Sykora from a film orchestra in Prague). Two
other works of mine on this recording are my "Ballade" for piano quartet and
my "Toccata, Aria, e Fuga" for organ.

My harp concerto (on VMM-3032) features an extensive solo for string bass in
its second movement. VMM-3038 features my Concerto for Clarinet, Bass
Clarinet, and Chamber Orchestra with Jaroslav Jerabek and Josef Horak as
soloists.

You can check out the VMM website (http://www.xs4all.nl/~gdv/vmm) for
distribution in your country as well as to peruse the other discs in the
catalog. You can also e-mail me directly for information regarding those
discs carrying my own works.

Yours truly,

For any who may be interested...
I've recently completed a 3-movement piece for Symphonic Band called
"Gaston Keep"; each movement is about three minutes long and the contrabass
clarinet has at least two important solos; along with a bass clarinet and
contrabass clarinet duet.  It would probably be on the middle of the college
spectrum or for a fairly advanced high school...  would be acceptable for a
community band with good instrumentation.  Any one who is interested can
contact me; and I can send you midi file(s) of the piece...
Thanks For Your Time

I am interested in looking at your piece.  I am actually in a high school
band, but I swing a lot of influence over what we do.  We're all right,
but we're a high school band.  However, I have the capability to round up
the upper third of the band and form an ensemble.  In any case, I would
like it if you could send it this way.  I am trying to learn more about
how to orchestrate for contrabass instruments.  I play things like tuba,
double-bass, contralto clarinet, and bassoon, so you can see I have
something of a love for low stuff.  Thanks!
