Subject: Contrabass Clarinet Key Adjustment
Date: Tue, 6 Oct 1998 12:55:45 -0500

I've got a Leblanc Bb Contrabass clarinet, range to low C.  One of the keys
isn't fully going down and is making the low range impossible!  I can't find
the adjustment screw for this particular pad.  Its the intermediate pad
between C and Bb or C and B natural, it's the pad in between those that
isn't quite closing, do any of you know how or where to adjust this to close
a bit more?

I take it you mean the pad above RH1 that closes when you press either RH1
or RH2?  The adjustment screws for that key are basically the adjustments
for RH1 and RH2: both RH1 &2 have adjustment screws which control how far
they'll depress the pad in question.  When you're holding the instrument in
playing position, I think (not having the horn in front of me at the
moment) they're right under your RH palm.  You have to adjust carefully so
that that pad AND RH1 and RH2 can all close.  If you still have problems,
the post or rod may have bent (in which case you may want to visit the
local repairshop).

Enjoy!

For those of you with an interest in bizarre musical instruments (and
I guess that would be all of us), check out http://www.efn.org/clay/
An acquaintance saw it in person and it said "Does it resemble
something rejected from Yellow Submarine?  Sure, but do they work?
YES!  They actually sound very musical.  They play like a bugle, but
the larger ones have tone reminiscent of a baritone or French horn.
