Nomenclature: type/maker/city/key system/wood/mounts/keys/date

SMALL FLUTES:
  • Piccolo in C, Eugene Thibouville, Ivry-La-Battaile, France, late 19th century.  Palissandre (rosewood), conical bore, 6 keys, good condition but needs some work to play. Marked on body, in cartouche, EUGENE THIBOUVILLE / A IVRY LA BATTAILE.  $600
  • Piccolo in C, JTL (Jerome Thibouville-Lamy), La Couture and Paris, France, circa 1890.  Fine ebony wood, 5 keys, original case.  Good condition but needs some work to play.  $600
  • Eb Soprano fl Gemeinhardt 1968.  Fine playable condition in original case.  Nickel-silver body and keys, range to C, closed hole. Bought from the first owner in 1992, never used since.  $1000 OBO
C FLUTES:
  • Martin, France, 1770s.  Flute in F, boxwood with horn mounts.  Recently restored by Joel Robinson.  Box with horn mounts, upper mount on foot is recent replacement.  Overall good condition, the embouchure has been scraped but the toneholes are intact.  Overall length 511 mm.  Marked on head and upper two joints, MARTIN/**  **/(Lion Rampant).  On foot, only the lion.  I date it to pre-1790 on the basis of the striding lion and the French revolution, Al Rice (a prominent expert on woodwinds) more-or-less concurs. He comments that the striding lion is typical of late 18c French makers such
as Naust and Geist and that this is a player¹s flute, not a courtly flute. ("A player's, not a royalist's, instrument").  He notes the small fingerhole size (4-7 mm) as being 1790-1800.  The key, to him, is typical of late 18c.  So 1790 seems a good date.
    $1000.
  • Astor (London) 1 key flute, boxwood with ivory mounts. Eminently playable with a period repair of a headjoint crack.  Dates to 1798.  George Astor sent his brother John Jacob to the US to sell flutes in the early 1800's; he branched out into furs, land and railroads and became, as John Jacob Astor, America's wealthiest man.  The Waldorf Astoria, which bears his name, is the fruit of this and similar flutes.  $1500
  • Goulding, D'Almaine and Potter, London.  6 key boxwood flute, ivory mounts, pewter plugs, 1810-20s.  Markings: On upper barrel ivory, PATENT. On Barrel, 6 (crown and flowers) GOULDING-D'ALMAINE / POTTER & CO / SOHO SQUARE / LONDON.  Top, bottom and foot joints marked identically, (Crown) GOULDING & CO.  Condition is very good.  Per Phillip Scott (auction house expert) "really a very nice example".  The wood has (as it always does) stuck over the metal head joint tenon, but this does not  affect the flute's playing. Besides, you shouldn't play regularly on a 200 year old isntrument; modern copies are cheaper and safer.  Otherwise it is in good condition, a very lovely specimen.  $1600.
