Subject: Isotopia Review

Just received my copy of "Isotopia" by the Nuclear Whales (1997, Whaleco, WM-104-CD). Fortunately, I had to do a lot of driving today, so I've had a chance to hear it through 3-4 times. :-)

This disc is all original compositions, all of which (with one exception) were written by Art Springs (the bass sax player). The CD includes (I think) all the new works that were played at the joint NW / SJWS concert (except the work for NW and concert band), and then some.

The one exception is "When Night's Shadows Fall", by Ann Stamm Merrell (the bari player). This piece is particularly notable for its use of contra. It starts and ends with solo contra, with lots of contra in between. A very introspective work.

The tracks:

total time 46:48Great music. I think I'll listen to it on the way home....Grant

You people don't know how POed I am right now. It is about my so called Vito bass clarinet supossed to be here this week. I called American Music today asking where it was, and the guy I was talking to said it would be 60 days. Sixty days!!!??? Why I asked... he said it was backordered and I was in back of at least 30 people. Then I was enraged with anger. When I asked about the contra alto, they said 18 months because it was back ordered, but then the bass they said "Okay, two weeks"! I was so happy knowing I would be offical part of you guys and knowing I have a very cool instrument soon, but the most important being I would enjoy playing it. My stomach dropped to my feet when I learned this new news; then I told him I would have to call him back. I then perceded to call The Woodwind and Brasswind . They are good. They have 6 Yamaha basses in their warehouse right now. He said it would take 1-10 days for it to arrive. Good deal! And only 50 smackers more! But, this is a Yamaha, not Vito. How does the Yamaha's horn compare to Vito's?

PS - Thanks for listening to me bicker :)

Subject: Video of Contra-fest

Since you asked, I will ask the members of my Lions Club if one of them will video the event. Of course 4 days of Contra-festing can not all fit onto a videotape. They will have to choose the highlights. I have the video machine, but am not good at deciding what to shoot. Hopefully someone in my Lions Club is.

I assume you mostly are interested in video of masterclasses, lectures, recitals, Grand Finale Concert and not public performances. Of course exerpts is what you will end up with.

I have not heard from Scott Palmer this year. He was the excellent photographer last year whose pictures ended up in the IDRS magazine. Hopefully he will read this and is into videotaping this year.

Mark
