When building your own low-end low instuments, consider carpet
tubes as a material. Carpet comes rolled on sturdy, 12-foot or
16-foot cardboard tubes. Thumping an empty tube gives a
satisfying boom. You can probably obtain enough empty tubes from
a carpet store to make, with a saw and some duct tape, quite a fine
contrabass marimba.

Hello,
For those of you who emailed me requesting a video of my
mini-presentation at the UW last week, I have good news- it turns out
it was videotaped, which means I can make DVDs of it for you.
The sound quality is not great, but it is enough to get the idea
of what the instruments are like. On the DVD is my presentation of
short solos on the straight tenor, straight baritone, C soprano, curved
sopranino, and soprillo (piccolo sax). Also included is the UW sax
orchestra playing three short pieces (all of them have bass sax, just
to keep us on topic here) and I played soprillo, sopranino, and
contrabass at various points. Total running time is 30 min.
This is all unofficial- I must stress that this is NOT of the
video/sound/packaging quality for a commercial release, but it seems
like it's at least a way to share these unique instruments, since I
don't have any commercial DVD plans in the near future. I don't usually
do things like this, but since there were so many requests for a
video(!), I am happy to give more people an opportunity to see/hear
these crazy horns. ;-)
That being said, burning the discs and shipping them takes time
and money. I would love to just give them away, but I can't afford to
right now (I'm still paying the mortgage on the contrabass sax...)
So here's my offer- if you would like a copy of this DVD, to
keep this simple, please pay for one of my So Low CDs through my
website, but send me an email at sax@jayaston.com letting me know you
want the DVD instead.
This costs $16 including shipping in the US, and $19 to other
countries. Instead of my So Low CD, I'll send you the DVD of my
performance last week. And to make it a better deal, I will also
include an bonus DVD of my DMA recital last November. It is also of
"home video" quality, but it has an interesting variety of instruments
and music, including performances on sopranino, soprano, mezzo-soprano,
alto, tenor, baritone, bass, contrabass, and subcontrabass saxes and
bass clarinet.
Enjoy!
Jay
