Thank you Grant and Arthur for your quick fix suggestions.  I will look into it.

There is a contrabass clarinet on Ebay:

Can anyone tell if this is indeed a Bb contrabass?  If so, how can one tell if it goes down to low C without looking for thumb keys?

While we are on the topic, are there any visual cues to differentiate Leblanc 340 and 350?

Willy

I don't play contra clarinet; but immediately thought of the sort of thing cellists use to keep their pegs from slipping when they hold the cello at playing angle.

This is a strap or piece of wood hooked to the chair leg with hole punched/drilled to hold the peg.

this appears to be a 340. if it's a BBb Contra Bass, i suspect it only goes to low D (concert C). the height of the bell is a clue. in my experience, if the bell is about as high as the topmost part of the instrument it goes to low C. this one is a little shorter, like my own 340, which only goes to low D.

Hi,

Vinny Golia has a new CD entitled "Music for Like Instruments: The Flutes" (NWCD0269, Ninewinds Records, 2004). This is not your typical flute quartet! The musicians are Ellen Burr (piccolo, C flute, alto flute); Jennifer Roth (piccolo, C flute, alto flute); Fawntice McCain (C flute); and Vinny (Db picc, C picc, G picc (aka G treble), C flute, alto flute, bass flute, and contrabass flute).

Tracks:
  1. Lonely Micheal ("The Last of the Wasabi Series")
  2. An Alternative to Oregnum
  3. On the Train
  4. Dr. Lubbeck pays a visit, so Sam phones some friends
  5. Poece
  6. Wasabi-One
  7. Six-Ninety
  8. Aquarina
  9. The Machinery of History
  10. The Everyday Phone Call (for Bobby Bradford)
  11. Wasabi-Two
  12. Red Dirt
  13. Wasabi-Three
  14. Da-A
  15. Xenomorph
The music itself encompasses both jazz and modern/avant-garde classical. There is (I'm assuming) free improvisation, as well as composed melody and harmony. The contrabass flute isn't used on all tracks, but you will definitely hear it when it comes in ;-)
I'm enjoying it a lot: this is a great disc. If you're looking for a stocking stuffer - even your own... ;-)

Enjoy!

Grant
