A few minutes with a photo editor solved the mystery: a
side-for-side reversal. The relationship of the image to the text is
what confused me - an effective optical illusion. Good call,
oboewannabe. Although I do wonder how the 'conventional' hand positions
came to be. Presumably a 'reversed' clarinet could be built - I wonder
if it would have any advantages. Besides confusing the heck out of
other players, that is. ;-)
I also wonder what the extensions do to the overall tone of the
bassetts. The low end of the soprano has always seemed to me 'darker'
than the low en of the bass, for instance. (The low end of my
contra-alto is a foghorn.) Presumably these bassetts are darker still.
Very interesting concept, these bassetts.
