I was in Brussels a few weeks ago and got to visit the Musical
Instrument Museum twice. In addition to the usual Sax built
saxophones and saxhorns, contrabassophone, reed contrabass, etc., they
had a quartet of Rothophones; an alto, a tenor, a baritone and a
bass. I had never seen a bass rothophone before, and had never
even heard of it, but it is a really beautiful instrument. I
tried to take photos of it but, since it was in a glass case and I had
no tripod, they didn't come out. Still, I highly recommend the
Musical Instrument Museum if you are in Brussels. It's only 5
euros.

Nope. I did explain
which end was up, but...
>(and who is in the little picture - looks like someone
repairing a horn or something)
Actually, that is the author himself (a somewhat larger version
of the same picture appears inside the book). Still can't tell just
what he's doing...
Enjoy,
