Subject: [CB] Sarrusophones on auction!

Well, this is pretty much last-minute notice.  I've just heard that there is a musical instrument auction being held in Vichy (France) on Saturday (6/15/02), that includes 9 sarrusophones .  I'm still waiting for details as to what sizes, makes, etc.  The website describing the auction is at http://www.commissaires-priseurs.com/ - time to brush up on your high-school French ;-)  The full list of instruments offered is at http://www.commissaires-priseurs.com/work/general/objet/objet.php3?vente_id=53 .  In addition to the sarrusophones, there are several ophicleides and serpents, a sudrophone, a mullerphone, a double-belled euphonium, a basset horn, a buccin, a 6-valved bass saxhorn, a few keyed bugles, and more.

My spellchecker just exploded... ;-)

Enjoy!

Grant

Hi Grant, thank you so much for the links.

I think it was you, who recently gave a link to a page with contrabass trombones . One of which was labelled as being in the shape of a helicon.

I disagreed on this labelling, but had no photo proof of what I found was behind that shape.
http://www.commissaires-priseurs.com/work/share/img/1169.jpg

shows two Buccinae. The dragons' heads aside, I think that their circular bell shapes had inspired the contrabass trombone mentioned.

Subject: [CB] Greetings from a new member

Hello all,

I'm a new list member and soon-to-be new contrabass BBb clarinet player.  I've been playing Bb soprano for about 30 years, and decided it was time for a change.  I just purchased the paperclip BBb Leblanc that was listed on Ebay last week, Item # 879366424, and I'm eagerly awaiting its arrival.  My community band won't know what hit them when we resume this fall ( Northern Virginia Community College , Alexandria, Virginia).

I've been playing for a long time, but this is uncharted territory for me.  I started my contra research on the Internet and was thrilled to find this list.  I've been reading through the archives , and I find the posts to be educational and fun - definitely an entertaining crowd.  I've found a whole new world that I never knew existed!

I'm hoping that my beast will arrive this weekend, so I can check it out and then ask for advice.  I know right off the bat that I'll need to find a good repair shop, and a case that's not held together with duct tape.  Any thoughts in the meantime would be most appreciated.

Thanks,
Debbie Herbert

Sounds fantastic.  Any chance of videotaping the events and making copies available for purchase for interested parties?
Best Regards,

Subject: [CB] Contra Alto Measurements.

Hi, again, everyone;

Can some kind lister please provide me with measurements for a LeBlanc contra alto clarinet (paperclip style) bell?
We need the length,  the bell flare width, and the diameter of the opening at the bottom of the bell (going onto the instrument).

Appreciatively,
Steven

Hi Debbie,

Welcome to the list! And congratulations on the new addition to your family.

I, too, purchased my paperclip "contrabeast" on eBay last year to play in my community band (Cupertino Symphonic Band , Cupertino, California) and have been having a blast with it ever since!

While taking recommendations on repair techs, let me give you mine. John Butler Instrument Restoration did a marvelous job on totally overhauling mine. He's a perfectionist and treats each instrument like his own. He has a lot of experience with the paperclips, and knows all of their querks.

Definitely look John up at:

And also check this list's archives for some interesting discussions on repadding techniques and playing hints.

Have fun!
