Subject: [CB] CD Review
Here's one that got jammed in with all the Christmas CDs (although it isn't particularly Christmassy):
The New York Kammermusiker Double Reed Ensemble "A Baroque Celebration" (1993 Dorian Recordings DOR-90189). Unfortunately, nothing in the CD lists the orchestration, but oboes, bassoons and *contrabassoon* are present in abundance. The tracks are:
Just over an hour of wonderfully done baroque music, with contrabassoon prominent and skillfully employed in nearly everything (not used in a few, like the Trios...).
- Suite from Le Mariage Forcé (Jean-Baptiste Lully)
- Suite from The Fairie Queen (Henry Purcell)
- Four Fanfare from the Court of Louis XIV (Philidor and Lully)
- Six Airs (John Jenkins)
- Three Short Trios from Almina (Handel)
- Suite from The Water Music (Handel)
And now, back to our regularly-scheduled year-end desparate-attempt-to-finish-everything-in-the-office and last-minute-holiday-shopping...
Enjoy,
Grant
