Dear Grant,
I am off to Germany tomorrow to fetch the Heckelphone and perhaps the straight Octavin as well.
I will be visiting Heckel factory,  Munich State Museum Collection of Musical Instruments  (5 Heckelphones (!), Heckel-Klarinet, Heckel Musette, etcetera.), and two major private collections. It is a possibity that an example of the elusive Orsi "sub-bass Heckelphone" to low F exists somewhere in Germany. I will take photos if I in fact find this.  In any event, I will report back on the Heckelphone.
Taking time to smell the roses,  Peter

Can someone tell me more about this horn? The sound? Does anyone have a
photo they can send?

Dear Jim,

I have never heard of a Buffet Crampon Contrabass Saxophone. Buffet Crampon
manufactures a contrabass clarinet. Nowadays only Orsi in Italy and
(together with Orsi) L.A. Sax manufactures one. In Germany there is a
company which manufactures a brand new type of contra bass saxophone, called
the Tubax. I march next year I'll get the opportunity to play on such a horn
in Switzerland. It has a perfect pitch and is easy to handle and play. About
a week ago I sent a picture of this Tubax to this group; but I had to format
my entire hard disk due to a new virus; so I lost all my contrabass photos
including the Tubax. But just go to www.google.com and type Tubax and you
will come across a picture of this strange looking contrabass saxophone.

Of the older contrabass saxophones I know only of Conn and Evette-Scheaffer
that manufactured a few of them. In fact, the CBS of The Nuclear Whales is a
Evette-Scheaffer.

Bye for now!

No no, I was referring to the French system contrabassoon. I've heard
Messrs. Ouzounoff and Decreux on their Buffet bassoons, I like the sound.

Zen koan: You know the sound of a Buffet bassoon, what does the Buffet
contrabassoon sound like?

By the way, Robert's report on his recent contrabassoon purchase was
most interesting!
