Yep, its either ABS or PVC (not sure which, but definitely some form
of plastic).  As for amplification, I think its just that the timbre
doesn't carry very well.  Even bass flutes don't carry very well: the
only time you hear them unamplified is when they're playing in flute
choirs (and there isn't any competition for the notes below middle C).

Isn't the standard set-up for a flute choir not something like:

1 piccolo
3 or 4 sopranos
1 alto
1 bass

So the comperition is taken a fourth lower.

Flutes in general have most of their energy
in the lowest harmonics.  If you check out the
audibility curves, you find that for normal
efficiency of radiation rates,  .01% rising to 1%
for some brass in the higer register,  you find that
it starts to require large fractions of a horsepower
(generated by your diaphram  muscles alone)  to make the
notes audible.  That is why common flutes end at f below
middle c.  Why Peruvian end blown pipes are noteable
for the high frequency (overtone) chiff, which only
 implies the low fundimental.

Bottom line, I think that amplification would be very useful
 for a contra flute.   Oscar

Subject: [CB] Bass sax ID requested

Hi all --

This poster to alt.music.saxophone wanted some info on a French-made
bass sax. No one there could help him.

I guessed from his attempts to read the brand name that it might have
been Triebert (the sarrusophone maker).

Would any of you scholars be kind enough to contact him directly if you
can help with his horn?

Thanks -P.

I've recently come into possession of a bass saxophone that I'm having a
hell of a hard time identifying and dating. The horn is definitely old, no
bis key and the C-sharp and g-sharp on the rack are not connected in any way
(Unarticulated), making a flutter between the two physically impossible. I
think the engraver's mark was screwed at the factory, so I'll give you the
only printed information I can find marked on the horn...

Cuibert-Brevete                        (this is what's the hardest to read,
could be Cuebert, Ciubert, Ciebert, you get the Idea)
    S.G.D.G.
       Paris
        L.P.

Thats it! I've not been able to pull anything up on this horn from anywhere,
if anyone has any information please reply to bariguy@cfl.rr.com

Thanks,
Shawn Pence
