Subject: [CB] Mic & Amp for Bass Sax

I was wondering if anyone had any advice for me. I am looking for a
microphone and amp combo. that will work well for my bass sax and if
possible, also be good for the rest of my saxes. I'm playing bari, tenor,
and a bit of alto in this particular band (rock and blues) at the moment,
and we want to add some bass on a few tunes.

Any info. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks folks...helen

Without hesitation, I recomend the "SWR" workingmans series Bass amps
with the high frq tweeter (standard). I am using the 12" driver model.
These are intended to be BASS AMPS, but they are absolutly full range.
There is a 15" model also. Either of these models actually GROWS more
power when you add a satilite speaker, seriously!. I use a 15" JBL in
this case. peels the paint off the walls. very affordable set-up. Did I
mention it has balanced mike input as well as two 1/4" input levels (hi
& lo) & three band EQ & affects loop & headphone jack.

Works with Tuba, Sax, Flute, whatever.

The name rings a bell.  I think they're actually Breton bombardes, which sometimes come in larger sizes with keywork. Lark in the Morning's catalog has offered such, at least in years past (special order only).  I've heard some on a CD of a shawms & bagpipes (bombardes & binious) band from Brittany, and the sound is similar to the Catalonian shawms.

Hello fellow contrarians!

My name is Clark W Fobes. Some of you may recognize me from my postings on
"Klarinet".

I am a professional player and mouthpiece maker living in San Francisco. My
primary instrument is clarinet and bass clarinet, however if one can be
called an "active" contra bass clarinetist I am that as well.

I own a Selmer series 9 rosewood EEb contra (ca. 1960) and a Leblanc BBb
contra (Low C). Because I also have repaired instruments for 25 years I
purchased both of these used and completely refurbished them myself - HUGE
project on the Leblanc. I also play mouthpieces that I have made myself.

I am currently (this week) playing BBb contra with the San Francisco
Symphony in a piece entitled "Choral" by Oliver Knussen. This recent
activity spurred me to join the Contra list. I am also the bass
clarinet/contra bass clarinetist with the "Skywalker Ranch Orchestra". I
have been recorded on contra in several movies including:

I am trying to compile a list of repertoire for the contra bass clarinet
(BBb or EEb) that includes solo literature, concerti, and orchestral pieces
with contra. I am not interested in band transcriptions. I am particularly
interested in obtaining a copy of the contra bass clarinet part from the
Penderecki Capriccio for Violin and Orchestra.

Thanks and I will look forward to posting again and reading the digest!

Clark

No, the instrument on the left is definitely a Catalan Tenora (tenor shawm).
See Baines--Woodwind Instruments & their History for an illustration Plate
X, between pages 80 and 81. The one on the right is probably a Catalan tiple
(treble shawm) but not enough is visible for a positive identification. The
one in the middle seems to be made of metal, and I haven't seen anything
like it (but again, too little is visible for a secure identification).

I have a follow-up message:  he says
"In the mp3 files of  my web site the double-reeded instruments are:

He's also sent me another image and mp3 file ("Tico Tico") - I'll see
if he minds if I post them.

And speaking of posting, Jaron Lanier sent me a picture of a new
contrabass flute by Jelle Hogenhuis, and permission to post it.

"In fact, it's serial #3, the first one with a C foot and trill keys.
Robert Dick and Chris McKenna are getting clones of it.

It actually plays quite well.  It's louder than the Kotato, although
it still needs amplification.  The Kotato is more agile and has
clearer upper octaves.  (I've also been having trouble with
intonation on the upper octaves, but I've only had it a week.)  Jelle
can play the upper octaves fine.  I haven't played Jelle's "regular"
contrabass, and I'm quite curious about it.

It sounds like a tiger purring, according to the person playing it in
the picture."

This would be one of the "bargain" contrabass flutes listed at
http://www.gwr.org/flutes/articles/c-b-f-1.htm.  The image is posted
at http://www.contrabass.com/pages/gabflutesmall.jpg.  Perhaps the
"small" is ironic ;-)
