Subject: [CB] Sarrusophones on the web

Just received an email from phil neveu, who apparently plays a
variety of oboes and shawms, and sarrusophone.  The page
http://philneveu.free.fr/formation.htm includes a picture of him
playing a Buffet Crampon Eb contra, while the two mp3 files at
http://philneveu.free.fr/musique.htm contain sarrusophone in a
supporting role for some form of ethnic oboes (I suspect they're
Catalan shawms).

They're all in French.

Enjoy!

Subject: [CB] Mic & Amp for Bass Sax

I was wondering if anyone had any advice for me. I am looking for a
microphone and amp combo. that will work well for my bass sax and if
possible, also be good for the rest of my saxes. I'm playing bari, tenor,
and a bit of alto in this particular band (rock and blues) at the moment,
and we want to add some bass on a few tunes.

Any info. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks folks...helen

If you must mic the bass sax, a big black Sennheiser 421(?) might be the way
to go. As far as an amp, if it were me, I'd spend my money bribing the sound
engineer to keep me up in the mix and don't spare the treble just 'cause it's
a bass horn. Some sound guys are dumb like that!. That high end will give
your horn more punch. Besides, with an amp, you'll be fighting the feedback
monster. Otherwise, just bring a softball bat to threaten the electric guitar
player with when he cranks it up too damn loud as usual.  Seriously!
If you insist on an amp, Galien-Kruger amps are real big with the hot
electric bass'ers and the Hartke speaker cabs have a nice edge with their
aluminum speaker cones. An SVT cab would kick butt too.
You'll also need a roadie and at least a pickup truck for all that gear!!

Seriously, just get a softball bat for the guitarist and bribe the sound
engineer!
I spent a few years as a roadie for local club bands as well as a local stage
hand for larger theatres that featured international rock acts. Real
musicians know how to turn down their amps to blend with the band, but there
are very few of those guys!

Good Luck! No! I REALLY mean it!!
Sincerely,
Capt. Earplugs

The instruments pictured at that second url look like the shawms I saw at rehearsal last week.

For a very rough translation, copy the url of the site and go to <t-mail.com>, select "T-Sail", paste in the URL, select "French to English" and clickon the "T-Sail" button. The website pops up with a very rough translation although some of the pictures might not take.

For a little bit better translation, copy your target URL and go to <http://babelfish.altavista.com/translate.dyn> and paste in the URL with the selection of "French to English". Pictures seem to work too!
