Hi All,

Just back from a 2 week driving tour of the mid-west and east coast with
stops at the Shrine to Music and House on the Rock. The Shine was quite
amazing, even for a free museum in a tiny town - their web site does not
come close to showing the incredible variety of old and odd instruments
in the collection. I won't go into too many details but I really  liked
the double-belled "twin-tone" mid sized horn that had both a cup
mouthpiece AND a reed horn - select either or both! (I really wanted to
try that one out...)  and there were quite a few bass horns I had only
seen in books until now. A Must See for all of you.

The House on the Rock has slightly changed since the last time I was
there - the large, somewhat fake mechanical orchestra/bands  are still
there (along with the real ones) and the whole place is just as crazy as
it ever was - some new exhibits in progress and all of the old junk-
worth a visit even at $20 per ticket, just for the overall weirdness of
it all...

anyway

good to be back home on the computer and tuba...

Thanks for the help. I'll have a look at Paul's website. I've got his
e-mail address somewhere.

The House on the Rock is the Frank Wright House, yes?  But it has mechanical
orchestras?

You might be thinking of what I believe is called "Falling Waters" or
somthing like that.  House on the Rock is in Southern Wisconsin.  Go to
www.houseontherock.com  This site does not do it justice.  I went when I was
little (only about 12 years ago) and have wanted to go again ever since.
Check it out.

No, it was designed by some amateur architect, and I use that title
charitably. I live 45 minutes from the place but have only been there
once. My recollection is that the mechanical orchestra's do not really
play, pre-recorded tapes do; correct me someone, it's been a while. The
pipe organ was not functional when I visited, perhaps it never was.

The House on the Rock is more of a parody of a F L Wright house - very
strange and silly. There are many old mechanical instruments and pipe
organs of authentic vintage and also a lot of fake ones. (If they ever
really worked I don't know how - the large brass horns had a small
"mouth bag/box" to replace human lips but the design seems impossible to me..)

there is more information on this place at: http://www.houseontherock.com/index.htm

or http://www.roadsideamerica.com/attract/WISPRhouse.html   (for an
unofficial viewpoint)

Thank you, your recollection is more precise than was mine.

As a "local", I have no motivation to visit the place again. Too many
items, too many in various stages of disrepair, and the architectural
style of the house itself might best be termed, "inhumane".

No, it is more of Robinson Caruso's Tree house gone Post Modern.  It has
a lot of junk there, most memorable are the Carosel Band Organs and two
or three rooms of mechanized Orchestra instruments.  When I visited there
in the early 80's the instruments did work in a fashion, sounded much
like a middle school orchestra today, badly out of tune and poor sound
quality.  Interesting to visit once, and it is within close driving
distance of some real Frank Lloyd Wright houses and buildings that do
have architectual merit.

Short of stopping by Elkhorn Wisconsin to try to see the Holton and DEG
facitilites, not much else that can be Music related in this message.
