A contrabass sax flight case boggles the mind: sounds as awkward as a
string bass flight coffin.  But it would be *great* to have multiple
contrabasses there :-)  Just imagine that low Db pealing forth from
the Wall and rolling out over the countryside...

But if you bring a sleeping bag, think of how much you can save on hotel
rooms by just sleeping in the case?  You can almost fit a family of four
in a string bass case.

While I am here, anyone know of any contrabass activities in the
Barcelona Spain area, any museums, great music shops etc?  I have had two
people senior to me backed out of going to a seminar there, and it looks
I am at the head of the line.  Trip will be in November.  Seminar is not
music related, but there is free time for junketing.

there is a very good musical instrument museum in "downtown" Barcelona a few
blocks from the Gaudi Apartment. ["Av. Diagonal, 373", open daily 10 a.m. to 2
p.m., Monday and Wednesday 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.   Historical instruments,
partitures, and other reminds to great musicians. as a website says...
www.red2000.com/spain/barcelon/museum.html  ]  They have an interesting One
String bass and some nice old large brass and many early guitars.  their full
catalogue is expensive and they don't speak much English.

great food, great views. great architecture... and a lot of modern ideas for an
ancient city.  have  a great time!

Subject: [CB] 1000 saxophones in China

Dear Grant

I plan to go to this event in China too and sended an E-mail to the organisators (till now I didn't receive a reconfirmation...).
Perhaps I will not take with me the heavy saxophones (baritone or tubax).... but soprano or sopranino...

I hope to meet you in China!

Yours

Peter

I suppose the "correct" answer is " the one I am trying to sell you".

Hi Peter,

My experience is that you're most likely to get a response if you
sign up using the web form (see http://www.tourarts.com/great_wall/).
The form response goes to both Tour Arts and to the Nuclear Whales,
and Tour Arts wants to be sure that NW gets all the same information.
I managed to get TA on the phone, and they *still* wanted me to use
the web form to register (although once I broke down and filled out
the form [twice, for myself and my daughter], they did send an email
confirmation within 24 hours).  If you want to register by telephone
or fax, your best bet is probably to claim that you don't have web
access.

I have this awful vision of 1,000 saxophones, with 700 of them being
nice portable sopranos.  (What is the "smiley" for shuddering?)  My
inclination is also to take just a sopranino, and slip it into my
carry-on luggage, but I think I'd rather *play* sarrusophone or bari
sax.

>I hope to meet you in China!

Same here!  I should be easy to find: I'll be trying to get as close
as possible to a contrabass sax ;-) (and possibly carrying an old
sarrusophone - they *do* tend to stand out in a crowd of saxes,
having the only overhead bell).

Subject: [CB] Leblanc article

The July 2001 Corporate Report Wisconsin magazine has an article
profiling the Leblanc company and its history. There's a mention of the
contrabass clarinets as well. Here's the link:

Subject: [CB] The Mummy Returns

Hi Grant,

About the CC contrabass sarrusophone in the Mummy returns. I attended the recording sessions for this film
while in LA last April. I was only there for the last day of recording (the last ten minutes of music for the
film) and didn't see the sarrusophone. There was however a contrabass clarinet and of course a contrabassoon. If
David Chatterton plays in the Royal Philharmonic perhaps some of the music was recorded in England. In any case
I'll send a message to my friend who played in the LA studio orchestra and see what he has to say.
It was nice to see a real live 115 piece orchestra playing for this film. Silvestri was very impressive
directing the orchestra and the recording session. The players as usual were astounding.
