Here's a startling thought - to me, anyway:  in a little over a
month, on June 13, this list will be 5 years old.  Seems like we
should have some sort of commemorative event.  Anyone have ideas?
Post a week of "greatest hits" from the list?  Everyone play their
lowest Eb concert at noon, GMT?  Everyone post their reminiscences
from the last 5 years?

For years, the only source I knew of was King Music, which lists the Selmer 41 Bb contra for $12,187.50, including shipping.  However, I suspect that the price hasn't been updated in quite a while, as they quote the list price as $16,250.

Now, Woodwind & Brasswind's website says they have one in stock (see http://www.woodwindbrasswind.com/product.jsp?node=9005).  Suggested list price is $22,880: their price isn't listed (but can be obtained by email).  They'd probably tell you the price over the phone - as long as you were sitting down ;-)

Enjoy!

Hi Peter,

Great article - finally had a chance to pick up the IDRS journal and
take a look.  And thanks for the kind mention :-)

Sounds like our kind of person :-)  I don't suppose he'd release a
listing of the instruments in his collection?

For a truly off topic celebration, I might serenade on my Garklein recorder!
Küng as very opposed to Paetzold!

Thank you for the initiative!

How about we all play the lowest note possible?

When I have purchased from International Music Suppliers I have talked to
Lisa.  Don't know if anyone else has dealt with them, or if they have a horn
in stock.   But my experience with them has been positive.  I purchased my
Buffet Bass clarinet and Rossi soprano clarinet from them.  While we are at
it, have any of you played a Rossi.  If they also made any of the low
clarinets I would buy one.

It's easy to transpose Mozart's Bassoon Concerto in to
treble-clef Bb, especially the parts in tenor clef. It's easier
to play on a bass clarinet than it is on a bassoon. The thing
that I like about it is that it sits in the upper register a
lot, and it develops good tone there. It also jumps around
between registers, so you need good control. It's also got fast
passages, so overall technique is important. Mozart liked the
clarinet, and I think he would have written for bass clarinets
if he had lived long enough. This is as close as it gets.

Subject: [CB] Bass Trombone Gig Bag

Does anybody have a recommendation for a lightweight bag or case for my
14 year-old son's Holton Bass Trombone?  The case it came in is
something like quarter-inch ply and is far too heavy for even me to
carry far.   He has to be able to get his instrument to school and back
once or twice a week - about a mile's walk each way - in addition to his
school work, so a shoulder strap is essential.

He's managed fine with a Vincent Bach gig bag for his Tenor Trombone
over the past three years, but the extra plumbing on the Bass makes me
severely nervous about potential damage to an expensive instrument.

We have considered Reunion Blues and Supersac, and also a hard,
lightweight case by Pro Tec.  This latter is not available to view in
local music shops, but only on special order which means paying for one
before seeing it.  But £195 is too much to bet on its suitability.  I've
phoned the wholesaler in the UK and asked them to weigh one for me -
they will do this when they return to work on Tuesday (this Monday is a
holiday here).

Any advice gratefully received.

David
