Hello Fellow Bass and Contra Aficionados,
I am happy to report a fellow bass clarinetist will be receiving my
scholarship for the 2001-2002 school year.  I am writing to ask for a list
of solos that would be appropriate for an intermediate to advanced college
bass clarinetist.  I'll keep you posted on her progress.

Thanks,
Jean

Hi Rich,

I own a Selmer rosewood BBb contra.
If you want one, you have to wait between half a year and a year. Selmer makes about 10-12 instruments every year.
I paid for mine (1 1/2 year old) about 11800,- US$. I bought it here in Austria/Europe.
Sound of the instrument is very nice but you have to work a lot on the throat tone register and on intonation. Keywork works very well (I give the instrument every half year for adjusting) but it could be more heavy (like the Buffet keywork).
Sound is not as loud like the sound of a metal Leblanc but with an open mouthpiece (I use several Selmer C* and C** mouthpieces, refaced with tip openings betwenn 2.30 mm and 2.70 mm with Marca reeds) you can also master this. I use the instrument a lot for playing experimental jazz or in combination with live-electronics and computers, sometimes also for Avantgarde.
I think, it's nearly impossible to find a used own because they're so rare and normally, if you have one you won't sell it .
Buffet-Crampon is also working on the prototype of a BBb contra made out of grenadilla (will be very heavy) but they told me a few months ago that it'll take another 2-3 years.
You should really be sure about buying one because it's very different to a bassclarinet and needs lot of practicing.
