Hi, Jim,

It's a subcontrabass, probably the one that she built for herself.  I'd love
to hear it!  She's got a web site with more information:

Recorders by Adriana Breukink (subcontrabass picture):

I can't find the picture at the Washington Post website, but I'm
guessing that it looks a lot like the picture on Hans' website at
http://www.hansmons.com/recorders/breukink.htm (which also shows the
other recorders she makes, and includes a 2000 catalog).  The
recorder in question is a subcontrabass in Bb, so its range is
probably down to Bb1 (just below the bass staff).  Doesn't seem to be
listed in the regular catalog... ;-)

Guess what arrived today:

Susan Nigro "The Bass Nightingale" (2001 GM Recordings GM2069CD),
again is solo contrabassoon work accompanied by piano.  A wonderful
addition for contra-maniacs :-)  The tracks are

1.  Ervin Schulhoff: Bass Nightingale
2.  Burrill Phillips: Concert Piece
Gunther Schuller: Concerto for Contrabassoon
3. I. Andante tranquillo
4. II. Scherzo
5. III. Lento tranquillo
     IV. Allegro vivace
Carl Phillip Stamitz: Concerto in F Major
6. I. Allegro maestoso
7. II. Adagio molto
8. III. Poco presto

The Schuller concerto is recorded here with a piano 4-hands reduction
of the original orchestral score.  I understand the orchestral
version includes a contrabass clarinet as a foil for the
contrabassoon.  Still, this is great listening!  The Burrill Phillips
work is always enjoyable: one would think it was written specifically
for the contrabassoon.

Hi Jim (and everyone)!

I stumbled across her homepage a while back, which features this recorder,
as well as others she makes.
There's a photo, contact info, and this caption:
"Adriana Breukink made a unique, 3 meter long, subcontrabass recorder in
B-flat. This impressive instrument is probably the largest existing
recorder. The instrument is made from pear."

The site can be found at http://www.hansmons.com/recorders/breukink.htm

All the best,

Jay Easton

Well, it's now official. I am the resident sarrusophonist for UTA, and will
be playing it in several ensembles including the orchestra where it will
substitute the contrabassoon on Beethoven's 5th Symphony.  Upon closer look
the mouthpiece is not original but a Holton soprano sax mpc. with cork
attached (the Elkhart, Ind. threw me off).  If anybody in the DWF area or
elsewhere would like to see/play this horn e-mail me privately and I will be
more than glad to let someone try it out.

Grant and group -

Seriously cool. I wonder if it plays any sort of a scale or if it is
just a novelty - like the "subcontrabass sax" that turned out to be
a prop. I don't see much keywork in the photo, and her hands
don't seem to have an unusually large span...

Subject: [CB] Clarinet question

Hello all -

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I switched to a Vandoren #3
reed on my 1440 contra-alto, and also cleaned up the geometry
somewhat on the GMB #3 mouthpiece. Sound is better, but
I seem to have traded the problems associated with the 2-1/2
reed for squeaks. This horn has been checked for leaks.

I can get a decent sound out of a 2-1/2 reed, if it is brand-new.
Do I have to go that route, or is there something else I can do
to de-squeak this thing? I played bass clarinet with #4 reeds
about 24 years ago, but I can't remember what I did with
emboucher and breath to keep it under control.

Jim,

You can find details about Adriana Breukink and a picture of the recorder
you refer to at: www.hansmons.com/recorders/breukink.htm
