Subject: [CB] Metal clarinets

I have a lovely piece of sculpture that I am working on that I am
incorporating a metal clarinet. And I  have a metal clarinet that if God
forbid I ever need to march again I will use it.  No way am I playing my
grenadilla Rossi outside.
As per music degrees a friend of mine tells me you can major on bass
clarinet at Ohio State.  If there any other schools out there I would be
curious to know who they are.  Why they make contra and bass clarinetists
switch to soprano clarinet is beyond me.  If you can major on the tuba why
no bass clarinet?
Great idea with the tomato stakes.

No music degree; play CB clarinet by my band.  Own several soprano clarinets, recorders, flute, alto and tenor sax, but no contra instruments other than the lower half of our piano :-]>.

In response to the degree question. I have a BA in Music from
Washington State U. They have a contra-alto but it's in very
much need of an overhaul. If I had found a job in Spokane maybe
I'd donate the job and take the tax deduction (a big one at
that). Oh well! I played on a wooden contra-bass at Kennewick
(WA)High School, I think it was a Leblanc. Real nice sound. If
it had any problems I learned to overblow them. Then I played a
Leblanc wooden contra-alto for Columbia Basin College (Pasco,
WA), and it was in real good shape. Then I got to repad a
Leblanc paper-clip contra-bass when I was at Renton Tech. It
belonged to a MIDDLE SCHOOL in Beaverton, OR. I like the wood
better. No experience with plastic ones yet.

As for the poor sap who bought 30 metal clarinets, I have also
heard that they make excellent lamps. Not just any lamp, mind
you, but a YARDSALE LAMP!!! You might make a profit yet!
