Lucky you - we have a c-bass and a c-alto, but nary a Bb bass to low C.
We have MORE literature that calls for a low C bass than calls for c-bass,
and do we have what we need? NO!

*laughs*  Daaah well.  If only I could buy my own...

No music degree.  Currently I own a Bundy contra alto.  I used to have a Leblanc paper clip but never really liked it.  The advantage of buying used is that you can sell for about what you paid.

Even if I had a music degree, they'd take it away if they found out I have purchased 30 metal clarinets on eBay.  Come to think of it, this fact may endanger my economics degree!

Well, since you don't specify what kind of Contra or what kind of music
degree, I can jump in here & say YES to both.
I have degrees is Music (Musicology) & Theatre. I own a Contrabass Trombone,
Contrabass Tuba, & the Stringed "counterpart".
(in addition to a lot of the other "Contra-list" type stuff: Bass Trombones,
Bass Trumpets, Tenor Tubas, Electric Bass, etc.). AND I have my career in
music (performance, composition, arranging, & teaching/conducting).
Did I own a Contra in College? No.

I have played both wooden and metal contras, and the wooden ones
sound WAY better. The downfall to wood is the fact that, despite
great efforts to stop it through technology, it deteriorates. It
is biological matter, and therefore decomposes, however slowly.
It affects how posts fit into their places, as well as tenons
and rings. It also has a tendency to crack. Unfortunate but
true. The metal ones don't sound as good, but they are
guaranteed to last for a long time, and require less repair.

My advice: if you have the money to spare to A:) buy the thing,
B:) keep it it good repair, then go ahead and buy it. If the
college you choose has one, odds are it doesn't work that well.
Warning: an overhaul on a contra will cost you anywhere from
$500 to $800, depending on the region and how much is wrong with
the horn, and they need done every three to four years, besides
annual adjustments (or more often for those).

Yikes! CM owns a Contrabassoon, but not a Contra Clarinet?
Wow! The price difference is staggering.
BTW you can still get an A on a low Bb bari, just stick your foot in the
bell.

I own a Leblanc contra alto IE a straight metal horn.  In high school I
played on a plastic Bundy contra-bass.  I liked the Bundy better IE it was
easier to play.  I've never played on a wooden contra alto or contra bass
so I can't say how they sound.  But I do own a wooden soprano and there is
a world of difference from my plastic one, the sound is more mellow.

I like the sound of the Lablanc, it isn't tinny, which I thought it would
be.  In the wintertime it's difficult to play because of the coldness.

I don't have a degree in music, that honor belongs to my sister.  My
musical knowledge is limited- I just learned how to transpose a few years
ago!

Nonsense!!  Metal Clarinets make wonderful tomato stakes in the garden,
and up north you can wrap 3M reflective tape around the bell, and drive
them into the ground next to your driveway so you don't run out into the
yard in the snowstorms.

You can hear it! I have the CD of the Riverside Church carillon. The
final track is 2 solid minutes of bourdon bell strikes. If you or anyone
is mp3 capable, I can convert it to a file and send it via email.
