No! Mailing lists are easier to keep alive. With message boards, people get
busy, and eventually it'll take a dive and never have any worthwhile
activity in it.

Stuart

I agree. It's a lot easier for me to check my mail than to go to a webpage.
At least somebody's thinking!

Grant, I like the way Sean Chisam does the Tuba "Tubenet" BBS
He's put that page on hold untill he returns from a long term (10
weeks?) commitment but it will resume again in june. I think. I don't
know how difficult it would be but it's SPAM FREE. that's what I keep
hearing that you are shooting for. I like things as they have been also.
but I have know clue what your end is like.

All I know is 20 contra emails a day is a bit much for me. that egroup
thing sucked.

Hi Grant,

The spam problem isn't that bad. People who think it is should
consider an e-mail reader that makes it easier to delete a given
message.  The process is pretty simple:

  1) Observe spam message title
  2) Delete message  <click>

End of story.  If an occasional spam is your primary reason for
moving, please don't.

My 2 cents worth.

Regards,

Daniel

You make some good points. However, in my experience, an inbox-based
list will get more prompt attention simply because the inbox already
has each person's attention, and does not require a visit to yet
another site.

Most e-mail programs offer the ability to filter messages.  I use
Netscape Messenger and the NeXTSTEP standard Mail with procmail.  Both
solutions let me create a separate folder for Contrabass mail and
automatically put all messages To contrabass@contrabass.com into that
folder.  (Repeat ad nauseaum for other mailing lists I care about.)
This keeps my inbox small enough for me to easily notice the unusual or
personal messages I care to see.

Here's a new one (for me, anyway): The South Bay Clarinet Choir will
perform on Sunday, April 30, 2000 at 7:30 PM at the San Jose State
University concert hall.  The SBCC consists of about 25-26 clarinet
players, including Eb, Bb, alto, bass, contralto, and contrabass
(guess who) clarinets.  The program (mainly fairly challenging
transcriptions) is:

(The program is subject to change without notice - probably at our
second and final rehearsal on Saturday...)

BTW, we still need one more alto clarinet, if anyone would like to volunteer...

Come and enjoy!

Unfortunately I won't be able to make it to San Jose for your concert, but
is "Barat" by some chance J. Edgar Barat? I once worked on one of his
trombone pieces.

Personally, I prefer the email format.  I find that I quickly get out
of the habit of checking bulletin boards for new posts.  When the
suggestion has been made in the past, a number of subscribers have
voted against it.

I'm not sure how the Tubenet BBS is maintained free of spam, but I
suspect that it requires at least as much maintenance as a listserv...

eGroup is now gone, at least as far as Contrabass is concerned.  Let
me know if you'd prefer the digest (1 per day) format, which is still
available, and I'll switch your subscription settings.

Its the occasional spam that gets through that you see: we average
several attempts per day.  Apart from fact that spam is essentially
cybervandalism, fraud, and bandwidth theft at the same time, allowing
spam to be distributed from my domain can cause some ISPs to block
all email from my domain.  I ignore nearly all the spam sent to me
personally.  Spam sent to my list gets tracked down and stomped on.
If only it carried a mandatory prison sentence...

There's probably enough of us to start a moderated (to eliminate spam) usenet
news group.  I watch four or five regularly - two that are sax, one clarinet,
and one woodwind.

Is anyone of us up to date on the RFC for beginning a newsgroup?
