What's that instrument playing the low notes at the
beginning of "Soul Bossa Nova" at the opening of
Austin Powers? Sounds to me like a bass trombone but
it could be a contrabassoon or a contrabass sax. Tell
me please.
Also do any of you know what the lowest-priced
contrabassoons are? What are the different brands,
models, etc? Does a contra have to be expensive to be
good? Does any brand make cheaper resin or plastic
contras ar are they all wood?

Amati makes a maple wood, Heckle system contrabassoon for around $4000.

I have tried the Amati cheap Contra and it is far inferior to the more
expensive contras (most of my experience has been with Fox contras, although
I've played, and liked, some heckels).  The sound of the Amati was weak and
was very difficult to play above written D above the staff.  I played the
Amati a few minutes after trying a new Fox contra with the same reed, and I
can tell you that, yes, there is a HUGE difference between the two.

Jon Carreira,
Check me out leading a band in the Hollywood Xmas Parade on UPN on December
5th (nothing lower than a Sousaphone in the band, I'm afraid)

Actually, the Amati Contrabassoon is a very good copy of an OLD Heckel design.
The cheaper metal and poor design of the Amati bocal is really what causes
most Amati contras to give most folks such a bad impression. Try one with a
nice bocal.  Yes, the extreme high register is very temperamental compared to
instruments costing $5000+ more, but they are wonderful school instruments,
and with a nice bocal and some customizing (as with most all instruments)
they do play much, much better.
