Why do you want to march with a wonderful instrument such a bassoon? The
bassoon is the most important instrument of the orchestra !THE ORCHESTRA !!!!!!!!
Please, don't march with it.!!!

Wait, wait ... how about slide bagpipes.  The new gas powered model
has the air compressor tuned with the drones.  The thing straps to your
back.  The only thing is, you can't play in the front row, or else the
flags carried by the honor guard end up flying straight ahead, which
just doesn't look right.

More like bass clarinet and low reeds, along with the tuba.

Well, in the event that the bass clarinet is present, yeah... ^_^

(I'm the bassist for the university orchestra, and this entire semester,
all four concerts didn't have one friggin bass part!  What's up with
that?!)

HEY EVERYBODY!!

I recently went to see the Phantom Menace (I didn't like it at all) but
I picked up some contrabass instrument parts on it!

  1. When Jar Jar Binks and the two Jedi are talking to the Gungan Boss Nass, a very low contrabassoon plays a few notes. This is near the beginning when the three first go to Gungan City.
  2. When Jar Jar is messing around with that little robot in Watto's shop, and he grabs it to keep it from running away, a bassoon plays a short low solo.
  3. When Jar Jar, at the restaurant, takes a small, half-eaten animal and throws it at a nearby alien, there is a bass clarinet part to add humour to the scene.
  4. When Anakin bids good-bye to his mother, there is a Heckelphone part.
  5. When Anakin is talking to the Queen Amidala, there is a Heckelphone part.
If you saw this movie and have any other contrabass instruments to talk about, please do reply.

Adam: These instruments you mention below are all new to me. Where could I
see or hear some of them? The Bassonore, from your description, seems to be
some sort of serpent. Anyhow, tell me more!

>You COULD get a metal-bore bassoon. They are slightly more expensive
because of all the brass, and somewhat heavier as well, but a metal
bassoon is loud and easy to hear.
You might also get a Bassonore. This is a marching-bassoon with the
fingerings of a traditional bassoon and a brass mouthpiece. It is much
louder.
The curved bassoons that are slung over the shoulder like a sousaphone
are infinitely expensive and rather rare too, but good for marching.
I hop some use is made of this helpful information.

I marched with a contrabass clarinet for a while.  The trombones in the next row
had to watch out for ME!  (I should have put a red flag on the bell!)

Here's a change: an alto flute with a starting bid of only $100, at

Also, a brass King sousaphone, reserve apparently $650, at

Enjoy!
