I LOVE it!

As for the Beltane fire, according to tradition, we're supposed to burn up
some things we don't want or use any more, to symbolize sending the past up
in smoke and making a fresh start (springtime, new growth and all that).

Anyone for tossing in programs from recitals that didn't go according to plan?

How about a witches' dozen of wall-tested reeds?

Broken corks?

Dead pads?  (Yeah, smoldering leather pads would stink, but not as bad as the
traditional sacrifices, about which maybe the less said the better....)

May your notes never crack,

Lelia

Roger's emotional response to being in the same room with a rosewood
contrabass clarinet and a contrabassoon reminds me of the time I was at a
concert at Radio France Studio 104 in Paris in December 1984.  The Paris
Conservatoire Orchestra did a program including Edgard Varese's Arcana.

The orchestra for this work is huge.  The entire perimeter of the band is
encircled with percussionists, all furiously busy.  But among the woodwinds
were a baritone oboe,  Bb contrabass clarinet (probably a paperclip -- I
forget),and  two French contrabassoons!  Seeing those contrabassoon bells
in the air was really something!  There were also 2 tubas, and of course 8
French horns... but for me the exotic woodwinds stole the show.

The performance was superb, BTW -- I clapped so hard afterwards I thought
my hands were going to bleed!

Here's today's bass flute for sale, an Artley starting at $2899 (a bit high
for the *starting* bid, if you ask me...):
http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=98793965

A (purported, anyway) soprano sax actually made by A. Sax, starting at
$4500 http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=98410135

A real curiosity here, which looks like a trumpet with a bent leadpipe and
a bass clarinet bell soldered on where the normal bell would be,

Enjoy!

A sub pedal?  Isn't that the thing you step on to stop the submarine?  ;-)

Seriously, I understand that skilled tuba players can play pitches below
the actual pedal tones of their instrument.  Perhaps one of our resident
tuba players would care to elucidate?

Hi,

Looks like Dillon music somehow acquired a Leblanc 340 (curved BBb
contrabass clarinet, range to low C), and has put it up for auction.  See
http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=99289288

While we're at it, there's also an Emerson alto flute, current bid $125, at

Enjoy!

Subject: Anyone interested in a vintage Bass Sax?
Reply-To: contrabass@contrabass.com

Hi again,

I've received an inquiry as to whether anyone is interested in a historic
bass sax.  So far, I have no other details: I suppose it is a general
inquiry from someone trying to decide if they're going to put their horn on
the market or not.

Feel free to let me know,

Grant
