Is the Silent Brass system out for tuba already?  I didn't know it was
available yet.

I have the trombone version of the Silent Brass System which works very
well with my contrabass trumpet.  The sound quality is pretty good
actually, but certainly not as good for serious recording or other
purposes as a decent studio mic would be.

Now, running it through an amp with guitar effects petals, that would be
interesting.

The prototype was shown at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago in
December.  It was a big disappointment.  The sound of the tuba through the
headphones with the mute engaged was as if the horn were two rooms away; even
with the volume control cranked up all the way, the sound was barely audible.
Yamaha definitely needs to do more tweaking of this product if they hope to
get tubists to consider its $495 suggested retail price.  The mute itself adds
a fair amount of weight to the top of the horn, but that is to be expected.

Sounds like it's the same as the Silent Brass for the other instruments with
the 3 different delays that make it sound like you're in a big echoic hall,
which could be a problem if the demonstration is in a big echoic hall! My
version for the trombone adds a large amount of hiss. It has a few areas it
could improve on, but if you play gigs with deaf monitor engineers and/or loud
electric instruments or use effects and amplification on your horn setup, it
seems to be about the only show in town as far as its ability to shut out
feedback to the horn. It's also very awkward to continuously hold the mute
from falling out of the horn, and it's a real pain getting the gaffer's tape
adhesive off of you horn after the gig.
Tuba Silent Brass, huh? One funk bass player comin' right up!
Now where did I put my envelope filter?!
Long live da funk!
