Subject: A miracle happened yesterday too!

The contra video arrived!!

For any newcomers, the contra video is a 90 minute compilation from video
shot at the 1998 Contrabassoon Festival in Las Vegas.  I haven't seen it
all the way through yet, but I like what I've seen so far!

Congratulations again, to Steve for producing it, and to Mark for handling
everything and making it all happen.

Grant

That is really wonderful to hear. You have succeeded and deserve to
celebrate. Enjoy.

Subject: didgeridoos

I was originally kidding when I asked about low didgeridoos, but there are
some authentic nutcases out there . On the didgeridoo list is one lady who
is drying and preparing a 34 foot long agave stem with plans to play it. To
practise up she uses pvc pipe. Just how long a pipe can a person blow? (I
think she put the question: how slowly can you flap your lips, anyhow?)
Eight-foot bamboo didges (very large bore) are apparently not rare.

Well, 8' is only euphonium range.  A CC tuba is more like 16', a BBb tuba
is 18': she would have a didj in BBB.  Didn't Philip Neuman play an alphorn
that was even longer?

I have a 32' CCC hosaphone.  The CC plays fairly easily, but it comes
into its own once you get above the 8th partial into the diatonic range.
On other news, I can easily play my CC tuba down to 4th valve G below CC.
Somewhere around that low G you hit the treshold where it stops sounding
like note, and more like passing gas.

Subject: Hello.

Hello.  I'm new to the list.  I live in Israel and play bassoon and
baroque bassoon.  I would love to play the contrabassoon, too, but
haven't had the opportunity, yet.  At the time I stumbled across this
list I had given-up on playing the contrabassoon; but now I shall not.
There is such a thing as a baroque contrabassoon (after Eichentoph) made
by Peter de Koningh in Holland.  I saw a circular advertising it that
was given-out at the Rotterdam IDRS convention.  I think it is big like
a tree, played standing-up.  Does it belong as an additon to your list
of contrabasses?
Secondly, a question which has probably already been discussed:
Contrabassoons range tremendously in price.  From affordable to very
unaffordable.  Are the cheaper ones any good; or is it only worthwhile
to buy when one has, say, won the lottery?
All the best,  Sarah Cordish
