Could anyone tell me the usual range of the contralto clarinet?
I often see them advertised as "range down to low Eb".
Is that Eb natural or Eb in the key of Eb?------------------------------

Subject: Re: contralto queryNormally, lowest notes for woodwinds are the WRITTEN pitch. The lowest note
for a D-flat piccolo is still D, for a soprano clarinet E, for an English
Horn B (though some models with low B-flat exist.) Saxophones stop at
written low B-flat, though some baris are available on special order with a
low A.>hi,

Subject: what the...Hey, one time a few months ago I was strolling along throught the local
library when i came across a nice book about musical instruments. Therein lay
photos of some crazy instruments. Some of which included keyed brass, a
microtonal, 24 note octave bass clarinet to name a couple. One thing that
really sticks out however was something called the octobassophone. It looked
like a bassoon suffering from gigantism. It was a double-reeded, wooden
instrument with a very large bore. It was noted in the book to have been
invented in order to strengthen the sound of the contrabassoon. Unfortunately
the book did not mention any pieces written for or including it. I'm sort of
wondering why I've never read any type of comment or discussion about this
animal. Has anyone else ever heard of this thing?------------------------------

That is the *written* Eb, sounding concert Gb on the Eb contralto. Leblanc
also makes an Eb contralto with range down to (written) C, sounding concert Eb.Grant

Subject: 3-D & Contrabass connection?Hmm. I notice by a recent message yet a third person on the Contrabass list
who also dabbles in stereo photography. What's the connection? Maybe all
those low-frequency vibrations make us see double?------------------------------

Where are the resources? Are there any Internet groups devoted to it? How
does one get started?
