Welcome aboard! You're now subscribed, although it may be a day or two before the next digest goes out. In the meantime, please feel free to post an introduction to the list (e.g., background, interests, instruments, etc.): not required, but appreciated.

Grant,

I wish to vote firmly on the side of keeping the digest form for Contrabass-L. Since signing up for this list I have moved to Saudi Arabia. As there is no local Compuserve access, I have to pay international telephone rates to get my mail. Also, passing data on international circuits is like a lottery: sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesnt. And the speeds are slow.

I find the digest form easy to use and trash free. I have had to drop most of the lists I was on because of the volume of messages, mostly junk, that I had to pay good money to download via international circuits. But, my opinion aside, you are doing the work and minimizing your workload is important, so do what you have to do.

I very much enjoy this list and hope to contibute more then I have been able to in the past. I feel somewhat guilty being on this list because the only instrument I have with me here in Saudi Arabia is an alto clarinet. The bass and contra-alto clarinets had to stay behind in London.

Thanks again for your great work.

Regards,
Larry

Bill Dawson,

Could you please tell your contra-bass clarinetist about the contra-fest. We could use him/her in the contra-band of basement instruments next year.

Thanks,
Mark

Thank you to all who gave me a little info on low bass voice. I've also gained a better appreciation for all of the contra bass instruments, which I never knew existed. Thanks for your help. But I must be moving on so, please unsubscribe me. Thanks,

Travis Corneliusen

David Feldman,

We need you and your piece for the contra-fest in Las Vegas, Jan 5-8, 1998! I am on the road now with laptop. WHen I return home, I will forward to you the address of Megan Ulmer in Pennsylvania who is coordinating our programming for the next contra-fest. Talk to you again after 1-26-97.

Well, here's the "skinny" as to that Stephen Fox query!

Steve says:

No, to the best of my recollection I wasn't in the band in La Jolla in 1953, playing bassoon or any other instrument. I guess names are more common than we think; I often get phone calls for the other Toronto musician with the same name, and apparently there are 11 namesakes (15 if you count the ones spelled with a v) who are Canada Trust account holders; common as muck.

Hi,

At this point I'll have to send you an audio tape by ground mail. Last April I had a BIG hard disk crash, all 4 GIGS worth, including all my MIDI stuff. Fortunately I was 99% backed up to data DAT. Unfortunately my DAT drive went flaky at about the same time, and I am yet to replace it. But I have a digital recording of my K2000 realizing it with (contra)bassoon sound, and I'll happily send it off if you send me a ground mail address.

Sarrusophone sounds perfect, by the way...at first I thought perhaps it was some sort of large brass instrument which wouldn't have been practical for my piece.

David

Grant,

I'm planning on visiting Kotato & Fukushima this Saturday. (Thanks for posting the address on your Web site!) Anything you'd like me to pick up for you? I didn't realize they were so close to me until I finally called them last week. I think I can get there in about an hour. The fellow I talked with said the price of their bass flute was around 700,000 yen, which at 118 yen/dollar comes out to about $6000. That's better than the $10,000 rumors I heard, but still a bit on the high side. Anyway, I thought it would be fun to see how it plays.

I asked if anyone there spoke English and he didn't seem to think so. I guess they don't have many English speaking visitors.

Sure, one of those double-contrabasses ;-)

Seriously, if they have any other CDs, I'd be really interested, and would send you a check to cover the CD + postage, etc. I suspect that other subscribers may also be interested if they have other CDs, if you're willing to ship stuff around the world.

I'd be interested to hear how they play (pun only sort of intended). US$6K really isn't bad for a pro-level bass flute, and you don't see that many that are hand-made. They may be closer to US$10K in the US when you add import duty and the importer's profit to the base price. If they have a contrabass or double contrabass available, I'm sure that most of us would love to have your review of the instrument.

Keep us posted! (pun intentional this time ;-)

Grant
