Me too.
Problem is the entire length has to be covered. For recording bass clarinet, I've used two mics about a foot away - live, I make do with one mic aimed just above the bell. Works good enough. Its hard to imagine getting by with one mic on a paper clip contra. A straight one would be even harder. And then you have to deal with the sound folks...
