Subject: contra neck strap

I love my Leblanc paperclip, but I find the neckstrap lug position akward. I'd like to be able to stand to play the horn from time to time. As it is right now, all the neckstrap is good for is as a safety leash when I'm playing it on a chair. Any suggestions?

Also, I'm going to be performing Toccata Marziale next week. The same part is provided for Bass Sax/Contrabass Clarinet. Any recommendations on which horn is more musically effective on the part?

Actually, I think I may have at one time owned that album. It may have been recorded in the mid-seventies. There was also a duet with contrabass clarinet as well. If I recall, the piano player was Muhal Richard Abrams. I might recall the record label later. But the name 0f the piano player may help with a search.

I have an album with some spectacular solos by Braxton on both Contrabass Clarinet and Contrabass sax. Live at the Montreux.

The old models had one or two loops positioned where you could actually support the horn on a neck strap. Unfortunately, the new one have the (single) loop way too high for that. Alternatives? I suppose you could have a new ring attached lower on the horn, or perhaps use a hose clamp around the lower part. Perhaps a 4' peg?

I have a contra stand, which is made by Leblanc. I've never tried extending it all the way up, but it might be tall enough to support the horn while the player stands. It has a sturdy tripod, and cradles the bottom loop of the horn, with a bit to latch onto the middle crosspiece (with a leather strap that secures it). The frame that attaches to the horn slips onto the stand fairly easily. If I remember, I'll crank it up and see how high it goes tonight.

Haven't tried it on bass sax. If I remember correctly, the BSx/CBCl part is pretty similar to the tuba part. Depending on your band, you may want to play the bass sax just to be heard.

Enjoy!
