Grant,

I live in Turlock and study bassoon with Bob Danziger at CSUS. I'm playing bassoon and bass clarinet with an opera company in Turlock and Modesto; we will be playing in other cities as well in the near future. I spend quite a bit of time at the university and will hopefully be playing with some of their ensembles. We'll see!

Mike Mori,

Of course, now that you live in California you will for sure be at the contra-bassoon festival in Las Vegas Dec 26-29? :)

Well, I guess we can forgive her enthusiasm ;-)

CONCERT REVIEW:

As some may recall, Saturday (9/28) was the concert featuring the San Jose Wind Symphony and the Nuclear Whales. A wonderful show! The SJWS is a quite professional organization, and did a great job on all the band standards. The program was: Elegy was a premire of a work commissioned by the Arts Council of Santa Clara County, specifically for the SJWS and the Nuclear Whales, and featured solo parts for each 'Whale (soprano through bass).

Burglar's Holiday is an arrangement of Leroy Anderson's Bugler's Holiday, with the trumpet parts played on three soprano saxes, and Art Springs (on bass sax) stealing the show. Art also wrote a few new pieces premiered that night, most putting the bass to very good use.

My wife and children even enjoyed the show, my wife even commenting that she liked the sound of the bass and contrabass saxes. Acquisitive thoughts suddenly spring up....

I had a chance to talk with a couple of 'Whales afterwards, Ann Merrell (the bari player) and Kristen Strom (soprano & alto). They had had a recording date scheduled for last May, but the project was shelved for the Summer when three of the 'Whales went on maternity/paternity leave. They've tentatively rescheduled for early 1997. They also have a concert all to themselves scheduled for February '97, also in Mountain View. I'll provide more details as they become available.

Oh yes, they did wheel out the contrabass sax, and I mean that literally. The sax measures 6'8", and is supported on a wheeled stand that adds another 12-18" to its height. Don Stevens (soprano, alto and contra) played it on three of the works, including Sing, Sing, Sing and Sangome (I forget the other one). A beautiful horn, and an impressive sound!

Grant
