In response to Adam:

I can't help you with your repair problems, but as for your concern with range...it is a combination of good ol' trial and error (so you are ar on the right track), and unfortunately, the fundamental 'bore to tears' excersizes that we all hate. True mastery of any instrument requires these excersizes, whether it be a little or a lot.

I should point out that, with at least clarinets, the bigger the horn, the more idiosyncratic they are. Each horn has it's own traits that must be accounted for. Some horns play certain altissimo notes sharper or flatter--the only solutions I know of are finding alternate fingerings or shadings, usually individual of the horn itself. My own experience with the BBb Contra has proven that the altissimo in general is a very tough range to play, period. Maybe that's just my horn. Anything above altissimo D is a task...however, I might add that it is a rare contra part that contains altissimo notes, so, unless you want to become a virtuoso, you shouldn't sweat those notes too much. ^_^

Grant, I enjoyed your website and I'm a subscriber to your list. I am an oboe player but work with all of the family including the heckelphone. (i recently performed giovanni daelli's variations on a theme from rigoletto which was a success) Paul winters cd is fantastic but there is also a work you forgot. it's called The Purcell Consort; Now we make merth. it's very good as well. No one has E-mailed me yet and i want to talk to others who are players of oboe family relatives.

looking foward to hear from you
thanks, chip zoller
