Subject: Contra list

Howdy y'all! My name is Andrea Hakari. I'm a 1995 grad of St. Olaf College, music major, and played bass and Bb contra clarinets in the St. Olaf Band and St. Olaf Orchestra. My bass setup was a Selmer Paris model # whatever-came-right-before-the-new-one, low C, Selmer C* mpc, Rico Royal 3.5 tenor sax reeds. Contra setup was a Leblanc France serial #654, low D, stock mpc, Rico 2.5 reeds. The bass is about 10 years old, the contra is 60 this year. And of course, just after I graduate, St. Olaf buys a new contra. Grrr. I did have several solo licks on both bass and contra. The big contra solo was in band, "Fantasia Variations on Eternal Alleluias" by Daniel Kallman. Biggest bass solo was in "Messiah, Prince of Peace" from the Trinity Canticles, also by Kallman. My bass has been on TV (watch "Christmas At St. Olaf" this holiday season, look over by the timps, oh, and I'm the one on the edge of the white/blue choir with the closeup on "Make We Merry"), and the contra should be nailed to the wall after being run over by a semi truck and taken into a field and shot. Seriously, have y'all ever tried to tune a badly abused 60-yr-old metal instrument? Not fun. I am currently on a forced leave of absence from bass/contra playing, as I don't own my own instruments, and am experiencing life as a French horn player for a while. In additional to playing, I do some conducting on the side (am the music director for the local production of "The Music Man" this fall). I also took undergrad elective work in composition, and have had works premiered in 3 states. I am nearing completion of a concerto for bass clarinet and band, only the third in existence, and believe you me, I have looked like mad! If anyone is interested in looking at it, it should be completely done around Thanksgiving; first and second movements are completed. Oh, no, I am not from Texas, as the y'all's might suggest; I'm from way-up-nort' Wisconsin. I just have several friends from Texas.

Later, all!

Howdy!

I actually did spend a year in Texas, while in grad school. Don't hold it against me....

One of the other patent attorneys in our department attended St. Olaf, Paul Savereide. Plays trumpet (and now bagpipes), and his wife plays violin: they both played in some orchestra over there.

We'll keep our eyes peeled for any contrabass clarinets offered for sale.

Grant--My EEb contralto clarinet (Leblanc) does go down to it's low C, which is the lowest Eb on the piano. Curious to know when the frequency is so low that playing an instrument becomes impossible due to the physical motion of the vibrating instrument. ALan ;}

Hope to hear from you soon!

At some point, I think they become percussion instruments ;-)
