Hi,

Some may recall that I mentioned the Dr. Nerve CD a while ago, as including contrabass clarinet. Nick Didkovsky replied to my inquiry, and said

>Michael plays contrabass clarinet on The Shameful Stain. It's used as
>a groaning/droning texture during the textural improv section.

>Thanks for getting intouch!
>Check out our web site http://www.ingress.com/~drnerve/

>Best,
>Nick

Now I just have to find where I left the disc....

Subject: building woodwinds

All this talk of tuba building has sparked my interest. Does anyone on the list make woodwinds? As with the unusual tubas, it seems that home construction is a much more economical (and fun) alternative to seeking out some sub-sonic squawks. I can imagine that even some PVC piping, a mouthpiece and alot of elbow grease would create a decent (at least for private consumption) honk.

Bob Bailey asked about the world's largest alphorn- I have played this instrument (built and owned by Peter Wutherich of Boise) in its 80 foot version, which is completely conical except for the last 8 feet or so. The length of the church in which I played it would not allow for the rest of it (which is cylindrical). It seemed to me that the 80' version was pitched in A flat, the fundamental (theoretically) being about 3 or 4 hz.

The event was the Pioneer Brass Christmas concert 3 years ago in Portland.

Yea! Grant is coming with instruments.

BTW, Since I am a travel agent, I can help you and wife do something before festival and safely get you to Lass Vegas in time for he event. I guess I need to negotiate with an airline again now. I am meeting with the World Trade Center (hotel) May 21 to sign the lodging contract. I guess I should lock up the Dorm suites also for those who don't want the hotel.

I think I will coordinate the hotel for everyone myself putting all rooms in my name and putting 2 people in a room.

Still looking for a "basement band" composer for the festival Grand Finale Concert.

Subject: Contra-fest competition judges

There was lots of discussion about who the judges would be for the Jan 5-8, 1998 contra-fest in Las Vegas at our Lions Club meeting last week. The general thought process is that since we are doing this to encourage the contra's to come out of the closet and think of themselves as solo instruments, the judges should be regular audience types, rather than contra specialists. Of course this may affect the presentation put forward by the competitors knowing this in advance, and so that is why I am doing this (in advance). No final decisions were made (other than Daniel Dorff-composer of piece) will be a judge if he wants to. I would like some feedback from you all.

Editor's Update:

In our never-ending search for list software that works, Scott is in the process of migrating the server from unix to WindowsNT. Assuming all goes well, we may then switch from SmartList (the current setup) to actual bona fide Listserv, with all the bells and whistles.

We'll experiment with it first, to make sure that it works.

Cross your fingers!

Say Mark,

Do you have any advice about how to transport a contrabass clarinet to Europe? The horn I have has a good case (46" x ~9" x ~7"), and I've already ordered a case cover with straps to make sure it stays closed. Still, it is (as most woodwinds are) a fairly fragile instrument. Any tips?

Thanks,

Grant
