Found MUZE on the web ( http://www.muze.com ). It is apparently a music database system, showing all the CDs in print.

Already have this, ordered directly from Neuma. I think Francis Firth first told me about this one. It's worth listening to, but I'll warn you its pretty modern sounding. Its #5 on the contrabass flute discography page ( http://www.contrabass.com/pages/dis-cbfl.html )

Just ran across this one a few months ago (at Tower). Its #4 on the discography.

This I haven't seen before ... time to try CDNow again...

Yes, this is a nice CD (1994 Clarinet Classics, CC0009). The contrabass clarinet isn't really very prominent anywhere on the CD, but the clarinet stuff is still great. Roger Heaton plays all the clarinet parts, multitracking where necessary.

This sounds intriguing, if we can figure out what it is.

The Hilliard Ensemble is a vocal group that often does medieval and renaissance era works. Maybe in the early music section...

This I'll have to find!

This has a contrabass sarrusophone. I had a copy of the CD, but it was completely defective (could not even play a note). There's another Roscoe Mitchell CD with contrabass sarrusophone on the discography page ( http://www.contrabass.com/pages/dis-cbsr.html ). Lovely Music has a web page somewhere.

If they're not on MUZE, they may be out of print now. Of course, there's still second hand CD stores...

I'm not sure how to post to the list. Do I mail you or just hit reply to the digest? Anyway, in regards to the c-alto vs. c-bass issue, my director says that contra-altos are simply cheaper. At the festivals that I've attended, I've only seen about 3 contrabasses, and those were mostly at tryouts. What a pity that most directors choose to put their lower-tier players on such a fantastic instrument! Also: I use Vandorens (#2; it's all they have) for my contra-alto, but they're contrabass reeds. Is this a major issue? Sometimes it seems as though such finesse concerns are so virtually nonexistent that I could slap a shingle on there and it would still work.

-C. Chappell

P.S. - I am sending you a forward under separate cover . It's hilarious, but a bit too lengthy to just send to the digest, I think.

To post to the list, simply send your message to " contrabass-list@contrabass.com ". I think "reply" probably works too, but that also depends on how your email program reads the mail headers. [EDITOR'S NOTE: IT DOESN'T]

>director says that contra-altos are simply cheaper. At the festivals that

Well, that's certainly true. Curiously, I find that all lot of the band music I'm getting now has an Eb contralto part, but no Bb contrabass part. I'm learning to transpose on sight from Eb contralto and C contrabassoon parts.

So long as the shingle is big enough ;-) If they fit the mouthpiece, that's what matters most. I've tried using Vandoren, Rico, and LaMarca (aka Leblanc) reeds on several different mpcs, and so far have obtained the best results with Vandoren #3s on a Leblanc mpc. On the other hand, I've never played contralto: you might find that the (seemingly) narrower LaMarcas are perfect for your mpc. The LaMarcas didn't fit the Leblanc contrabass mpc very well (seemed narrower). All three brands are supposed to be "one size fits all" for contrabass, contralto, and bass sax. I've ordered them from Woodwind & Brasswind, and typically received them fairly quick. Of course, at $25 per box, you may not want to experiment as extensively ;-). If you like, I can send you "one of each" from what I have to spare if you'd like to try out a few varieties.

This is Gregg Bailey again, and you said you are curious about the CD I mentioned that has contrabass flute on it.

Well, I live in Odessa, TX, and in Midland, TX, we have a music store(of books, CD's, tapes, computer software, etc...) called Hastings, and in the cd/tape area are a couple of "computers" that let a person know just what cd's and tapes are available(period) by categories. What I usually do is select CLASSICAL music, then search by INSTRUMENT. There is quite a long list of instruments to choose from. The only thing is, one computer seems to be "updated" while the other one is not, and all of my specialty instrument CDs I had found before that I had been interested in (and had gotten print-out receipts of containing bar codes and essential information)don't appear on the other computer that seems to be updated-- I wouldn't know why. Anyway, I found 3 or 4 cd's with contrabass flute, picked out 2, and gotten print-outs(this system is called Muze, and there is one for videos as well). I got print-outs of other low instrument cd's,too. I'll give you the catalogue numbers. If you can get any information about these, I would like to know, because out of my many print-outs, no music store has said that it has any information on the cd's or can even get them, that the Muze is a catalogue of what is supposedly "out there."

Francis,

I think someone should call on the telephone as a followup to your letter. Also, if someone has time to use Yahoo and search for email address for Leblanc, that could help too.
