Hello all, a question for the paperclip contra players out there:
When you are playing the contra either standing or sitting, what
do you use to prop it? A stand? A stool? Or do you
just rely on the peg? Is it long enough for either sitting or
standing position?
Can anyone give me some specific details? I am thinking of
getting a paperclip so I am considering the practical issues.
Thank you.
Willy

I wouldn't recommend playing a Leblanc 340 standing up (you
might tangle with some overhead lighting fixtures {;>]), but i would
say that a neckstrap will help add stability to your playing geometry.
The peg can flex a little.

Hi Willy,
I have a model 342 so I always play contra standing(with
the peg, of course). But I don't like only having the one loop
for a neck strap and having to use a sax strap all cinched up.
I'm getting a second loop added further down so I can use a 2 hook bass
clarinet strap. If you want or need to stand up, that's a
different thing. For my bass I got one of those Robert James
weight lifter stands, the one for alto sax and I've used that until I
got my stand up peg made. Dan Oberloh fabricated a stand up peg
for my bass out of odds and ends in his shop, the rubber peg bottom
being a stopper from an Erlenmeyer flask. I think that if I had a
paperclip and I was playing in a group that stood up, I would get the
Robert James weight lifter, and if I were walking out in front of a
group, like to perform a solo, I might get a stand up peg.
Hope that helps,
Bradley Stevens

Hi Willy,
I almost always play contra while seated, and find that the peg
works just fine. Depending on how tall you are, you may find it
possible to just rest the bottom bow of the horn on your chair, and
dispense with the peg.
For standing, there
is
a stand made by Leblanc especially for the 340 and 350 paperclips,
which extends up high enough that you can play the horn while standing.
(See
http://www.contrabass.com/pages/cbcl.html for
pictures.) I normally use the stand just to hold the horn when I'm
playing something else, and have it set just so that the peg (in
playing position) doesn't hit the floor while the horn is on the stand.
Haven't had occassion to play while standing, but I have checked out
the stand and found that it would serve that purpose if necessary.
I ordered my stand through
Woodwind
& Brasswind, and had it drop-shipped directly from
Leblanc. Now that they've resumed
making the contras, perhaps they've resumed making the stands as well.
Worth a try :-)
Enjoy,
Grant
