Subject: [CB] organ CD info

In case there are others who would be interested in the organ recordings I mentioned:

I HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend the 2 CD set of Thomas Murray playing the Skinner organ in Woolsey Hall at Yale University.  He is the organ professor there.  On the first CD, he narrates an audio tour of the organ, talking about the different types of stops before playing them.  The little things he plays on the various stops are usually short but very artful and inspiring.  He demonstrates the 32' pedal stops in two different places on the recording, the latter featuring the magnificent Contra Bombarde (a reed stop of immense power).  (32' Pedal stops play down to CCCC, about 16 Hz.)  The second CD in the set is a recital he gave there.  This can be ordered at: http://www.pipeorgancds.com/thommurplayw1.html
As the site mentions, the supply of this recording is limited, and I had to wait a few weeks when I ordered mine last year.  The price is $32.50.  The order button is at the bottom of the page, and there is a sample track at the top of the page.

The other recording I had mentioned is a recording of the world's largest organ (counting by number of pipes rather than ranks) in the Atlantic City Convention Hall.  This organ has never been fully functional due to flooding that occurred just after the organ was installed many decades ago.  As a result, only about a fourth of it is functional, and the tuning is quite questionable.  However, the recording is entertaining and interesting, and the last track features a downward 2-octave scale demonstrating the 64' Diaphone.  What you basically hear in the lowest notes is the "beaters" of the pipes vibrating down to about 8 Hz.  Unfortunately, I think the organist who was demonstrating the stop accidentally hit 2 notes at once at some point in the scale.  This CD can be purchased for $14.98 at:

http://store.yahoo.com/ohscatalog/atcitconhal.html

Please let me know if anyone decides to order either of these.  Again, I highly recommend the first one of Woolsey Hall.  I wish every household in the nation had a copy of that CD set.

I have something like 80 organ CDs, so I certainly would have other recommendations as well.

Happy Thanksgiving!

-Gregg

Please plug concerts, advance notice is good, possibly with last minute reminder - this applies to all list members.  CD releases are good news as well.

I am 3,000 miles way, but I do listen to your recordings and it makes me feel good just knowing you are playing out with big horns.
