Remember what we said about the amati bass clarinet (and amati
saxophones and amati clarinets and other assorted amati
crap)? It goes for their bassoons too. Period.
Every Amati instrument. Period. Don't waste your money.
(And don't even ask about the 'inexpensive' amati contrabassoon).
Also, why is this apparently the only bassoon model in
existence to feature this logical two-piece bass joint??? >>
Heckel will make one on special order (like all Heckel's -
special order), and Fox offers it as an option on their professional
bassoons. I did try an "Olds" brand bassoon a few years ago (with
a shortened bass joint), and my gut reaction is that is was probably an
amati bassoon with a different name on it. There are a couple
other off-brand bassoons with a shortend bass joint and long bell, but
they're crap for the most part also.

I've heard favorable things about Jupiter instruments, so it
might be a good deal. A school route man for a large regional
music store recommended them at the level of or Bundy or
Conn.

OK. Here's the deal. I originally ordered a Vito
Contrabass Clarinet from Woodwind and Brasswind for $2850, but I was
disappointed with the one I got. So I returned it, and I now have
that much available as a credit. I have learned to play all of
the main woodwinds over the years, and primarily played bass and contra
clarinets in school. I have the least experience with
bassoon. I love musical instruments so much; I even played
euphonium and cello at one point. I'm just wondering how I could
best spend that credit. I would appreciate any advice.
$3,000 is alot of money, but it's such a shame that that amount doesn't
go very far when it comes to low instruments. Maybe I should just
get them to refund the credit back...
What would you guys do????

Well, WW&BW has a very respectable Chinese-made 4-valve
rotary BBb tuba for less than that...
But then I'm prejudiced.

re: "Gerard Leblanc is now retired, and I don't know how to get
in contact with him."
This probably doesn't help at all, but who knows? In July/August
2001, when I negotiated the Leblanc obstacle course to find out the
manufacturing date of my BBb serial number 803, I eventually received
the answer from g.leblanc.france@wanadoo.fr
For the record, here was the answer; I had also asked about the
material of the gold springs; note that at no time had I sent a fax!
---
Dear Mr Kilpatrick,
We acknowledge receipt of your fax
regarding your contrabass clarinet and
are pleased to inform you that this
instrument was made in December 970. As
far as the springs are concerned, the
gold colour is given by the special
anti-oxydizing product (berilium)
with which they have been treated.
Best regards MT EYCHENNE
