I've finally gotten around to posting this.  I had a college buddy who had a record (real vinyl!) of a group which called itself the "Burband Philharmonic."  On the cover of the album was what looked like a posterized/colorized photo of a US Civil War era brass band.  The group playing was actually a dixieland band.  One of the instruments used was an Eb contrabass saxophone .  It was *very* prominent on their rendition of "These Boots are Made for Walking."  I ended up with the album (my friend gave it to me) but it has long since disappeared (perhaps a roommate made off with it, I don't know).  There was one other tune on the album that made noticeable use of the beast.  I think it was "Big Noise from Winnetka."  "Boots" was by far the most use the thing got on the recording.

Has anyone here heard of/heard this recording?  Does anyone have it?  I'd like to get an mp3 of "These Boots..." if anyone has it.

Cheers,

David Bobroff

That's "Burbank" of course.  Same typo twice.  Duh.

Yes! The low concert Eb is played repeatedly, and VERY audibly.  The chromatically descending (or glissando) line played on electric bass in the original Nancy Sinatra recording is also taken here by the contrabass sax.

Here's an excerpt from the liner notes, written by Gary Owens, the announcer on Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In:

"The Wilders [referring to the Wilder Brothers, who are the principal performers] constructed a special contra bass saxaphone [sic] (that talks and wets), and stands eight feet tall (especially when it's proud)."

I don't want to be a party pooper, but is there any copyright infringement if I do so for you?  After all, the album has been out of print for many years.  If it's kosher, perhaps Grant would want the MP3 uploaded to the Contrabass website.  What do you think, contrabassers?

doing a web search (with the proper spelling :-) gets plenty of hits from record collector sites. This one sells CD copies: http://www.cdbbq.com/web_store.cgi   but they are not cheap!
