Sorry, couldn't resist ;-)  The above Frank Zappa quote was the
double reed list "Quote of the Day", and I immediately thought of
this.  Seriously, though, it *is* nice to get out in front every now
and then - something I'm sure most of us bass and contrabass denizens
can relate to.

Hear hear!  Although in my case, I think it had better be a good
decongestant...  Anyone else have the plague this week?

Hi all,

What does the group think is the best Bass Flute? I am looking at a Yamaha
and an Altus and wondering which would hold its value for resale better?

Sincerely,
Linda

For about the same money for either the Altus or the Yamaha, you can have Eva Kingma build one for you.   My lovely wife owns both a Yamaha and a Kingma bass.  Although she preferred the Yamaha to the Altus, she eventually asked Eva to tailor a flute according to her own special preferences.

As it seems to be the case with flutes, the headjoint design seems to make a significant difference in tone; Eva normally ships an assortment of three with her bass flutes; you simply select the one you want and return the other two.

I've heard that Trevor James is planning to come out with a bass flute; if it's anything like his altos, it ought to be an outstanding value for the money.

Cheers,
Chuck

I had Eva Kingma replace the lip plate on my bass flute.  If her bass flute
plays as well as her lip plate embouchure assembly it would have to be a
great bass flute.

Subject: [CB] Ziporyn: bass clarinet CD
From: Eric Mumpower

There's a 5-minute RealAudio segment on the NPR web site reviewing Evan
Ziporyn's latest album, "This Is Not A Clarinet". (This review was
originally aired on September 10, 2001.) He mixes many different techniques
and styles; it sounds like perhaps he's been working both with didg players
(perhaps a little circular breathing on the track under most of the
interview?) and the interview had a great funk clip, both on bass clarinet.

You can use the following URL, or go to www.npr.org and search for
"Ziporyn":

The CD is available (with online previews) from CDNow and Amazon. I just
ordered mine! :-)
