Dear  Grant and fellow bass-o-philes,
I received a letter from Dr. Joppig about the straight Octavin which was offered on Ebay recently. This instrument will be relisted for Ebay auction again soon ( with photos)  I have a copy of the 1909 Adler catolgue which indeed lists the instrument in question as : "Einrohiges Oktavin bis b von Oscar Adler". This is a truly unusal horn. I will be glad to foward photos and Joppig letter  on request. Happy hunting!
Cheers,   Peter Hurd

Subject: [CB] Subcontrabass Recorders - New Recording
Date: Mon, 26 Nov 2001 09:10:00 -0000

Dear List,
I expect that most of you have seen pictures of the subcontrabass recorder
created by Adriana Breukink for the Amsterdam Loeki Stardust Quartet.
They have now made a recording which utilises this instrument among others
and a great recording it is.
It is on Channel Classics CCS 16998 and is entitled Fantazia.
It consists mostly of Purcell's great fantasies for viols - the Loeki
Quartet play 8 of the 9 complete 4-part fantasies and the Chaconne in G
minor.
In between they play Pavanes by Richard Mico and John Jenkins. These are set
at the lowest possible register and use a quartet of very deep recorders
including the subcontrabass in Bb (at A=466) which is one of the instruments
listed as being used in the front of the booklet. It is quite audible and
the sound of 4 recorders playing this low is great - and quite different
from hearing flutes play at this pitch.
Needless to say the playing qulaity is impeccable in its ensemble and
musicianship and this recording, apparently the last to be made by the
original formation of this group, comes highly recommended.
Apart from the deep instruments the music is that of a genius played by one
of the outstanding groups playing early music.

Interesting post, Francis. One question: what is the advantage to
setting A at 466? If I heard a piece in the key of A played under
such conditions, I would hear it as 'Bb' (I have 'perfect' pitch).
At A=440 on the equally-tempered scale, the next highest note
(Bb) is 466.16 Hz.

You can hear a sample of the subcontrabass recorder at
www.channelclassics.com.  Click on "New Releases" and choose "Fantasia."

Hi Peter,

You're welcome to send me the pictures (email or otherwise) for
posting in the list archives (i.e., linked to the digest pages).
Alternatively, you could post the pictures in one of the Yahoo
groups, like the heckelphone group or the sarrusophone group.  Not
completely on topic, but close enough.  After all, neither group is
exactly drowning in traffic... ;-)
