Subject: [CB] Contra-Alto Clarinet on eBay

The Selmer contra-alto clarinet at  <http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?MfcISAPICommand=ViewItem&item=1482742742> is *really* early.  It's made of the unfigured red rosewood they used only early on.  Later they switched to, I think, tulipwood, which has distinct dark brown stripes on a yellow-red ground.

The case shows it comes from a school, so you have to expect it to have had a lot of use and abuse.  I have one about that age, and Steve Fox had to practically rebuild the bottom end of the upper joint, using well over 30 pins.

For a decent mouthpiece, go to Clark Fobes, who charges about $235.  For $135 or so, you can get a Selmer C* from Woodwind & Brasswind, but Selmer's machinery is badly out of adjustment, and you have to figure $100 to have it made playable.

Depending on condition, it might be worth a little more than the $1650.55 it's at now, but I wouldn't go over $2,000.  I *highly* recommend Steve Fox for restoration work.  Be prepared to wait nearly a year though.  He works alone and has a big backlog.

  Best regards.

Thanks, Ken, for the scoop on the Selmer contra alto clarinet on eBay.  It
would appear that caution is warranted, but if the price is right, it could
be a relatively satisfying and inexpensive entree into the contra club.

Speaking of things on eBay of interest to fellow contrabassists, I offer the
following (perhaps to my own bidding detriment, but I figure, if you want to
pay more than me, its yours!):

  A nice Buescher bass saxophone,
  http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1484388374

The current price of this horn on eBay is around $3300, and if you get it
under an escrow arrangement (highly recommended, because some Bueschers have
been said to be a little stuffy) you should get a great deal.  The bass
saxophone is a lovely instrument, very versatile (check out Nuclear Whales),
extremely rare these days, but always a welcome addition to the symphonic
  band.

To put the price in context:  a very nice Conn bass saxophone (probably a
better name in bass saxophones of this vintage) in silverplate with gold
wash in the bell recently sold on eBay for $3750.  A very, very good price.
These selling prices add additional credence to my own hypothesis (which I
put forward a couple of months ago on alt.music.saxophone) that price levels
for the higher end specialty woodwinds, at least on eBay, have dropped
markedly over the last year.  Selling prices that I saw for comparable bass
saxophones a year ago were in the $5000 range; I remember a very nice Mark
VI Selmer bass saxophone on eBay going way higher than my own $7900 bid...as
I recall, about $13000 or so (really, now, you're better off going to that
great French dealer Grant turned us on to recently and paying $9500 for a
  brand new Selmer).

My gut tells me that you're seeing some pretty low prices now, with good
upside.  Of course, if the economy (and maybe personal circumstance) has got
you a little concerned about laying out lotsa dough for yet another big
horn...well, that's why the prices have come down!  In any event -- admit
it! -- if you are reading this post, you won't be selling any cool
bass/contrabass instruments you add to your collection.   All this talk
about investing in such instruments is pure fantasy, because you won't be
able to bear parting company with any of those big beasts in the basement.

  Man, I'll say, but....

OTOH, I was watching a Conn F Mezzo (# 1482497688).  In the last stages of
bidding, it leaped TO just over $4200!  It was in great shape and came with
case, but $4200?!?!  I guess that's what makes auctions interesting.

While browsing around on eBay I found this antique instrument dealer in
  France.

A couple of old bassoons, Selmer Mark VI bass sax, opheclide.

I'm sorry if I gave you the wrong ideas somehow, but I have no idea the
  answers to your questions.  Sorry.
